How do I Create an Advert for One on One Tutoring Services? Find examples! You may have recently read the story of the Singaporean private online tutor, who specialised in academic support and economics and, within a very selective and elitist education system where the tutors can struggle, managed to earn £750,000 a year! Anthony Fok is probably one of the best tutors in the world! Or even, closer to home, the Web 2.0 story of Alban, the French YouTuber and English tutor who draws in around 15,000 students every week for English lessons filmed in the street. A successful concept that allowed him to launch his own business.
Feeling inspired, yet?
One on one tutoring is becoming more and more important in the UK and around the world. So, whether you’re already a tutor or looking for tutoring jobs in Glasgow, tutoring jobs London, or Cardiff, if you have the knowledge and desire to teach, now’s the time to do it! But if you want to live off private tuition at home , you’ll need to take care of the marketing and commercial sides of your private tutorial business . You need to know how to find your students.
How do you market yourself in order to get to this stage? How to pique potential students’ interest and make them trust you?
A well-written advert is the answer!
Whether in primary or secondary school, re-sitting an A Level, or enrolled at university, there are students struggling at every level. What do they need? Usually just supplemental instruction, sometimes in the form of intensive courses, to improve their assignment marks, or to prepare for exams effectively, and achieve academic success.
For tutors who’ve never needed to boast about their own achievements in such a way, how do you write such an advert ?
Should you just start by looking at some examples?
This worked quite well when we were making our first CVs and cover letters, didn’t it? Now Superprof is the only place you need to go for inspiration! Just search for Maths , English , Philosophy , Design , Singing , Economics , ICT , languages , G uitar courses or any other course that you might be teaching and you’ll find plenty of relevant examples. Which type of Advert should I use for Giving Private Tutorials? Whether your objective is to reach as many potential customers as possible and provide learners with additional learning support via a fantastic home tutor service or simply to find a full-time job, there are a number of channels you can use to find “prospects”, as they’re known in marketing. Make yourself stand out in a sea of adverts! The Power of the Web The first channel, accessible by nearly everyone is, of course, the internet. In the UK Superprof is obviously your platform of choice for giving online lessons, with over 200,000 connections taking place between tutors and students in the last 12 months .
Don’t forget to make the most of classified ad sites, too! People in the UK regularly use sites like
Gumtree, Ablewise, or Craigslist for finding employment and advertising private tutorials! The advantage of using the internet and these sites to find students for private tutorials is the referencing they provide. Thanks to the keywords you add to your advert, students looking for music, language, ICT, sport, philosophy, maths, science, economics, geography, or history tutors, will be able to find you easily. Leaflets and Pamphlets
What other type of adverts could you use having already tapped into the online market?
Why not go old-school and place adverts in the heart of your neighbourhood or town ?
Handwritten or printed, it’s up to you. The city is yours! You must have seen those little adverts while out shopping or walking around, the ones taped to posts with contact telephone numbers hanging from them!
Why not do the same? We recommend that you make them eye-catching, well-written, simple and colourful. Include your classes in bold, your experience, your rates, and your details. Put them through your neighbours’ doors or on car windscreens.
Leverage Local Contacts Finally, to make your mark in the surrounding area, head into any businesses with local community notice boards: chemists, bakeries, bookshops, newsagents, butcher’s shops, the greengrocer’s, supermarkets, etc. Don’t hesitate to mention if you give private online tutorials as well ! Speaking about your Teacher Training and your Experience Let’s look solely at editing your advert for at-home tutorials .
What elements should be included in this advert? You’ll probably agree, it shouldn’t be overly long. It’s important to be concise and to the point, giving only the most important information.
Your qualifications and experience are a key element, for example. We wouldn’t trust anyone to provide academic support, homework help, GCSE or A level revision, or even music lessons!
You’ve got to be able to provide references to your potential students. How else are you going to convince them or even their parents? If you went to Oxford, Cambridge, or an Ivy League school, you should probably mention it in your tutor ad. What was your training?
Was it part of a department of education programme? If yes, then you’ll have completed postgraduate studies in teaching. Professional training in which you would have learnt all the important methodologies and pedagogy and graduated as a certified teacher.
But depending on what you’ve chosen to teach, perhaps your training came from a music school or academy (singing, piano, violin, guitar, drum classes, etc.), a language school (Arabic, Chinese, German, Russian, Spanish lessons, etc.) or university for example.
Your academic career might be important when it comes to your advert . Just as your day job might be!
Don’t hesitate to mention whether you’re working as an educator, a maths or algebra tutor, whether you teach geometry, calculus, trigonometry, or whether you provide one to one academic tutoring or study support.
This reassures clients! Traditional training allows the tutor to provide tailor-made tutorials adapted to their student’s learning style, which is always popular. Private Tutorials, Academic Support and Homework Support: Show your Rates There are several types of in-home tutorials . Adaptability is, of course, part of what makes a good in-home tutor . Academic support for students struggling in school, for example. Their parents demand academic coaching over the course of several weeks to get their child back on track and avoid resits. Of course, we need to mention exam preparation : SATs, GCSEs, A Levels, or even university classes! To help a student every day, homework help can be good for students who are finding their tasks increasingly difficult. This will also provide them with a particular methodology. And then there’s private tutoring , which allows the student being tutored to learn, work, progress, gain study skills, and improve in the company of their own private tutor. Make sure you always display your price when advertising as a personal tutor. Whatever route you’re looking at going down, you’re going to have to decide what your rates will be before you start. An hourly rate with respect to your position, speciality, and your performance.
You can work this out by looking at your competition but bear in mind your price will be a product of your qualifications, training and personal
qualities as a teacher.
Once you’ve done this, don’t forget to put your price in your advert so that potential customers have all the information they need!
Do you know which steps you have to take to become a private tutor ? History, Geography, Maths, or Language Tutorials: what are your specialities?
It’s hugely important that you also include your specialities on your advert.
Don’t forget to explain them, too!
Do you specialise in giving tutorials for science A Levels ? You should mention whether you’re a maths tutor, physics tutor, chemistry tutor, or a biology tutor. You should also mention whether you offer test preparation and one to one academic tutoring as well! Are you a specialised French tutor or Spanish tutor and looking for tutoring jobs ? You can offer your tutee grammar, speaking, conversation, or vocabulary tutorials. You can even teach how to conjugate irregular verbs! Would you like to become a tutor in order to provide fitness courses ? Then you should definitely mention things like weight loss, muscle strengthening, cardio training, workout exercises, stretching, relaxing, how to gain self-confidence, or even nutritional advice that you can give to athletes looking to lose weight and get slim. Are you a school teacher who gives piano lessons ? You shouldn’t miss the chance to mention learning solfège, left and right-hand coordination, the history of music, great composers, and different musical styles (jazz, blues, classical, soul, rock, or folk, etc.).
Once again, the goal isn’t to list everything about private tutorials, but rather to use your keywords well to grab and keep your potential customer’s attention.
Finally, why don’t you indicate where you can give your private tutorials ?
Find freedom, happiness and independence!
