I have over five years of experience teaching and mentoring young students. In all the courses I teach, I want the students I interact with to have an increased understanding of bioscience. As an instructor, I aim to foster scientific curiosity and challenge students to be analytical and critical. I believe my role as a mentor is to motivate, inspire and support students.
Teaching to me means presenting ideas and concepts in a clear manner and utilising a wide array of teaching approaches. When teaching molecular biology, I ask my students fundamental questions and urge them to support their views using scientific information. I also ask my mentees to produce a short presentation on the importance of a topic we’re learning e.g proteins. I found this activity effective as it fine tunes their writing & communication skills. When teaching complex biochemical topics, I invite my students to create mind maps detailing key processes they’ve learnt. To assess what they’ve learnt in my class, I ask students questions relating to what I’ve taught. This allows me to gauge what they understand and what concepts they are struggling to grasp.
As a first- class honours graduate, I know what it means to be committed and dedicated to education. I love learning because it’s part of who I am and I’m passionate about teaching.
I was selected from my fellow peers to work on a final year project funded by the university I attended. The project aimed to investigate whether cancer stem-cell gene profiles could be used as predictors of relapse in patients with oral carcinoma. The project was a success and I was featured in local newspaper and invited to give a 15min presentation about to staff and researchers at the university’s annual research conference.
