3rd Year Student at Queen Mary University, London : offering English lessons (language / literature / essay help). English speaking students only please - ages 9+.

Methodology

I prefer to teach on a one to one basis, as I believe this way the student can best benefit from the exercises set, in addition to being able to ask questions directly.

Most importantly, I want the student to feel comfortable in the learning environment I provide - having myself been in difficult learning situations in the past, I understand this to be paramount.

Ambassador

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualifications verified and response guaranteed. Charlotte will plan your first lesson with care.

Experience

I’m a Film Studies student at Queen Mary University of London, currently in my final year of study. I studied English Literature, History and Graphic Design at A Level, and have since worked as a screenwriter on several short projects, and a proofreader also.

As a writer, I am extremely passionate about literature, and also theatre. In recent years I have also become learned in philosophy, and thus can approach tutoring and research from a wide variety of cultural angles.

Charlotte and I were co-writers for a short film which was produced during lockdown. Having never met in person prior to working together, I can vouch for Charlotte's ability to successfully work remotely with others. She is conscientious, supportive and always keen to give advice and explore ideas. She is also great fun to work with, and I would highly recommend her as a tutor.

Interview with Charlotte

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Charlotte — I developed an interest in English Literature in school, when we first began studying Shakespeare in particular. I have always been a lover of theatre, and thus learning more of Shakespeare transported me to the world of Classics. This led me to tutoring in the sense that I love sharing my knowledge and passion of English Literature, and aim to help everyone possible understand the intricacies and art of the subject; it doesn't just have to be an exam to be passed at the end of secondary school - it can become a lifelong passion!
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Charlotte — I tutor in both English Lit./Lang. and Film Studies (which I am studying as a degree); most often we cover spelling and grammar, gradually progressing to more complex material. I like to use classic literature as an example when discussing literary devices such as metaphors, similes, pathetic fallacy etc. Of all the subjects covered, I least like poetry - I never quite gelled with it.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Charlotte — While I don't have any role models from school, I have taken role models from my wider learning. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The West Wing) is a massive inspiration to me while I myself am writing scripts, and also when I am teaching; he has a step by step, very forward approach to explaining his methods while in turn also using humour to get his point across. J.R.R Tolkien has been an inspiration of mine since childhood, when I first read his novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - his ability to build a world from scratch, languages and all, is awe inspiring.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Charlotte — To be a good tutor is to have the ability to listen to and understand one's student. In order to learn, the student needs to feel comfortable when in the lesson, and having a tutor that listens to your questions is absolutely paramount. Patience, too, is important when tutoring; understanding that not all of your student will learn and progress at the same pace. Perhaps most importantly however, is the ability to have fun, laugh, during the lesson - a boring lesson is a lesson that teaches nothing.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Charlotte — I often remember my time in school English lessons. My teacher was, to say the least, not qualified for the job. I would complete my homework - miserable - and complain to my grandma. She had taught me to read and write before I started nursery as a tot, and once she heard this she clapped her hands and said 'Not to worry, I've got just the thing you need', and proceeded to hand me piles of books to read in my own time. She continued to do this until I went to college - I credit her for my love of reading and literature.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Charlotte — I often found analysing poetry difficult when I was in secondary school - this continued to college where I carried on English Literature as an A Level. There was something about the various different devices used in poetry (e.g. iambic pentameter) that didn't quite click, right up until I did my exams!
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Charlotte — My passion lies in cinema, and screenwriting - which I aspire to pursue as a career. I've loved films for as long as I can remember.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
Charlotte — What makes me a Superprof? I suppose it's my natural inclination to help students better understand English as a subject, and my need to discuss literature with anyone who'll listen. I love the look on a student's face when something they have been struggling with suddenly clicks, but more so I love the questions! Being asked a dozen questions fills me with excitement, as it demonstrates the student's will and passion to learn.
