Feel free to contact me for any further information not provided below. I'm currently taking on pupils across a range of brass instruments and i'm happy to answer any questions by e-mail.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach all brass instruments from beginner to advanced. I am also happy to tutor on music theory, topics relating to GCSE/A Level Music, and give lessons on the basics of practical conducting. Lessons in conducting can be 1 to 1 for basic technique, or with a pianist in order to cover repertoire.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a music graduate of the University of Manchester, where as well as my instrumental studies, I studied widely in musicology, composition and research based topics. In 2009 I was awarded a scholarship to study for a Masters degree on the orchestral studies programme at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
- How much do you charge?
Every first lesson will be charged at the reduced rate of £10. Fees are as shown above, and half hour lessons are also available at a reduced cost.
- Where do you teach?
Based in the Docklands area of London, I am able to travel anywhere across the city to teach or i'm happy to teach at home. I am also frequently available in Manchester and Belfast. Please get in touch to discuss any of these options.
- When are you available?
I am usually available at various times throughout both weekdays and weekends depending on your needs, and I try to be as flexible as possible to suit you.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am happy to teach anyone who is willing to learn and enjoy music making! Whether you are a beginner or advanced performer, a younger or mature student, i'd be happy to teach you. If you are taking up an instrument again which you haven't played for years, or you are an ambitious pupil preparing for an exam or an audition, perhaps a recital on your instrument, or if you are just playing for personal enjoyment. I hope to be able to help you reach your goal, whatever it may be, whilst having an enjoyable time making music.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am happy to provide tutoring for GCSE/A-Level Music via e-mail.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
If you would like to arrange a lesson, please don't hesitate to contact me. I try to be as flexible as possible, both in terms of my availability to teach you, and with the content of my lessons, in order to ensure that your time spent learning is as rewarding and enjoyable as possible.
- What kind of experience do you have?
As a musician, I have a wide range of experience as a performer, conductor and teacher. As a trombonist, I have a varied range of experience across many different genres of music. My recent professional experience has included being appointed Principal Trombone of Castleward Opera for their 2009 Summer season. Most of my orchestral experience is on alto/tenor/bass trombone; but I have also occasionally been required to play euphonium and bass trumpet. Other ensembles I have enjoyed playing in have included small jazz combos, new music ensembles, big bands, brass bands/ensembles/10 pieces/quintets, and I have experience in playing in styles ranging from early music to pop. I am happy to teach anyone with the ambition to further their knowledge in any musical style.
As a conductor I also have a lot of varied experience. I have been associated as a rehearsal conductor for some of the best ensembles in the fields of brass and winds, including the Leyland Band, Vaganza Brass, and the North Cheshire Wind Orchestra. I have experience as an orchestral conductor, and I currently hold the position of principal conductor of the New Belfast Sinfonia, whilst being engaged on a freelance basis by various ensembles both in the UK and Ireland. My experience as a conductor has demanded my detailed knowledge of instruments across the whole of the brass family. This has allowed me to offer lessons on any of these instruments, with successful results.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a full, clear, 'enhanced' CRB check carried out in June 2010, a copy of which is available on request.
- Where and with whom did you train?
My trombone tutors, past and present, have included the following people: Eric Crees (Principal Trombone, Royal Opera House); Keith McNichols (Bass Trombone, Royal Opera House); John Kenny (Solo Artist); Chris Houlding (Ex-Principal Trombone, Opera North); Rob Holliday (Ex-Principal Trombone, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra).
I have studied conducting with Mark Heron, and have attended masterclasses with International conductors such as Atso Almila, Richard Bonynge, Mark Elder, and George Hurst.
