Initially tutoring the Classical languages, I now specialise in tutoring, motivating, instilling confidence in 10 to 13 year olds to become independent learners, in preparation for pre-tests and scholarships to the top British Independent Schools.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
My specialist subject is Classics but I also teach all the subjects for Common Entrance preparation, but more focus on the arts and languages for scholarships. For my confidence-building approach to tutoring: (concealed information)
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I achieved a 2.1 in Classics from Durham University in 2005. My most recent degree was my LLM in Maritime Law at UCL in 2007-8. Before that I did the Graduate Diploma in Law and Bar Vocational Course between 2005-7 at the College of Law. I was called to the Bar in October 2008.
- How much do you charge?
Taking into account my experience and existing tuition workload, I typically charge £60 to £80 per hour, depending on the subject, lesson duration, aim, level and location. I generally do not charge for travel if within a reasonable distance from my location. I charge the whole lesson price if it is cancelled within 24 hours.
Residential rates between £300 to £400 per day.
- Where do you teach?
I typically tutor at students' homes in South West and Central London and on international placements. I also tutor online via Skype and FaceTime.
- When are you available?
As a full-time tutor I am available weekdays and evenings and online tuition on Saturdays. During half-term, Easter and Summer tuition I am generally on placements abroad, but I endeavour to keep regular tuition in the UK via Skype during these periods.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
From 9/10 years. Pretest preparation, 11+, Common Entrance 13+, Scholarships
GCSE, AS-level, A-level and Undergraduate Classics/Latin/Classical Greek/Classical Civilisation

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare children in the arts subjects for their 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance examinations (mainly Private School scholarships such as for Eton, Winchester and St. Paul's), GCSE, A-level.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Arrangements for online tuition are made via Skype or FaceTime. I can also use an online whiteboard which I share with the student during the lesson. This has become a popular, complementary and convenient choice when tutoring in person at any particular stage in the process may not be convenient.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I see tuition to be not only a way of fostering independent learning but also as a means of being a mentor and example to inspire others to be the best they can be. I am committed and dedicated to helping students fulfil their potential.
- What kind of experience do you have?
Since 2016 I have been President of The Tutors' Association, the professional body for tutoring in the UK. I have tutored over two hundred students one-to-one over the past nine years. A recent podcast interview with me can be found here: (concealed information)
Tutoring since 2009, I now have thousands of hours' experience of tutoring Latin and Classical Greek and other arts subjects to Independent and State School children, undergraduate and mature students, as well as pupils aiming for Common Entrance, Oxbridge and scholarships. Focus is structured and thorough study of language work on grammar and vocabulary, as well as set-text literature as appropriate.
Seven years' experience of tuition in London regularly and abroad during school holiday periods, as well as online.

We have had the pleasure of Adam's company at several events and he has always been a welcome guest, liked by everyone.”
“Adam has been my tutor for 2 years in Latin. I took my Latin GSCE last summer and got an A*. I am now studying with Adam for my AS level. Adam is a fine tutor who explains things well and has guided me well through the exam syllabus. He is conscientious, polite and a talented teacher and I am happy to recommend him.”
'Our son did not have any real interest in Latin but Adam was excellent in getting him really interested and giving him excellent guidance. We were delighted in August to hear that our son had gained an A* in Latin. He would not have achieved the top grade without Adam's help. Brilliant!"
