I am an experienced brass teacher based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. During the 20+ years I have been teaching brass, many of my students have become professional performers and teachers in their own right.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach trumpet, cornet, flugel horn, tenor horn, trombone, bass trombone, baritone, euphonium and tuba. I teach these subjects to pupils of all ages and from begineer to diploma standard. I am a trombone / euphonium specialist. I have given masterclasses and led workshops throughout UK and abroad.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
Having studied at the Royal Marines School of Music, I took a BA(Hons) course at the University of Salford under David King, while working as a freelance trombonist.
- How much do you charge?
The first lesson is FREE! I always give the first lesson free to discuss what the student wants to achieve. I charge £25.00/hour for brass lessons and music theory tuition. Fees for workshops depend on location.
- Where do you teach?
I teach in schools across Sheffield, and travel to pupils homes for private tuition, covering Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Workshops can be delivered nationally & internationally.
- When are you available?
I teach during the day & evenings, including weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
My current pupils range from 7 to let’s just say over retirement age, from beginner to Degree/Diploma standard.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I usually work from the ABRSM syllabus or specific college requirements, however, pupils are under no obligation to take exams and some of my students are learning purely for pleasure or to develop particular techniques.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Enjoy it! Music is great fun, so don’t forget to show that to your audience. All my lessons are tailored for individual students and circumstances to help you achieve your aims and enhance your enjoyment of music.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught privately for over 20 years, in Independent schools and for music services in both Bristol and Sheffield. I currently teach brass for Sheffield Music Service. I have also led practical workshops and summer courses nationally and internationally. As a performer, I have worked with numerous orchestras, chamber ensembles and brass bands, including Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) band. I have recorded extensively with the BBC, Granada and other radio/tv stations.
