Bespoke tuition in maths and physics - qualified teacher with many years of experience.

Methodology

I am an experienced classroom teacher working as a full-time tutor. Whether you are seeking short term tuition in the run up to exams or more long term tuition, I'll be glad to help.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach A-level mathematics (pure, statistics and mechanics), GCSE, IGCSE and International Baccalaureate Mathematics (HL and SL). I also teach physics to the same level. I am able to teach at university level too in many areas in mathematics and physics.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold a BSc in physics from Warwick University. I achieved an upper second degree. I also have a PhD in experimental physics research and a PGCE in science.

- How much do you charge?

For GCSE tuition I charge £35 per hour
For A-level I charge £35 per hour.

- Where do you teach?

Online

- When are you available?

I am available 9am to 9pm six days a week.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach 11-19 year olds and adult learners.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for GCSEs, A-levels and the IB diploma in mathematics and physics. I also prepare for entrance exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I use OneNote to share my screen. The student can also write notes that will be visible to me. The notes are automatically saved.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I want to build a good relationship with my tutees and thus help them build confidence. Have you thought about Skype tuition? It is cheaper and really no different from face-to-face tuition.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am an experienced teacher of mathematics and physics and have taught in a wide range of international schools in the UK, Europe and Southern Africa. I have been tutoring regularly now for about two years. I am now a full-time tutor.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I obtained this in May 2013. I am happy to show you this.

- Where and with whom did you train?

My academic degrees (PhD and BSc in physics) are from Warwick University. I studied my PGCE at Sussex University.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I tutored an A-level student recently at Brentwood School. he lacked confidence but had the ability. I was recently told that he had achieved A grades in C1 and C2 which I had been tutoring him in. I have also tutored a young man who is studying for an engineering degree and needed help with some of his units.

I must say that I am very pleased with the outcome of your work with my son. And I am very glad to hear that he has been very hard working.
I am confident that Niccolo's experience with you will help him to re-assess his capabilities and to re-evaluate the importance of resilience in working.

Interview with Alan

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Alan — I started private tutoring in order to be more independent and have more flexible working hours. This was in 2013. Since then, I must have taught about 5000 private lessons.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students.
Alan — I enjoy teaching all aspects of mathematics and physics and particularly enjoy it when students are very engaged and ask difficult questions. There are plenty of difficult questions in physics. I find advances in technology that make us less dependent on fossil fuels a very interesting area of discussion.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Alan — There are a lot of role models that I have, particularly in physics. Richard Feynmann is a very interesting character, a brilliant physicist who made contributions to a vast range of fields in his subject. I also think that Patrick Moore is inspiring because he was entirely self-taught.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Alan — Patience is a vital quality as is an ability to listen to the student. It's important to be able to rephrase questions in a way that can be understood.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Alan — Some of our lecturers at university were not so inspiring and not particularly interested in teaching, research being their main priority. I recall asking one lecturer what a sunspot was. He was a full professor and head of the Physics Department. His reply was 'If I knew that, I'd have the Nobel Prize". I was very disappointed by his response, to say the least. It is something I would never say to a student.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Alan — It is definitely challenging keeping up with advances in physics and technology. However, the internet is a great tool because there are so many great resources online these days.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have any other passions?
Alan — I am a keen runner and focus mainly on long distance races, marathon distance or longer.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof?
Alan — I thoroughly enjoy what I do.
