About the lesson

I am a guitarist living in London, recently graduated from the RWCMD in Cardiff. After picking up the guitar at 7, I am still discovering new music and techniques; my experience allows me to relate to beginners to advanced players of all ages.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

All aspects of guitar, acoustic and electric. I teach rock/pop, jazz, funk, blues, R&B, reggae and more.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold a 1st Class Bmus degree in Jazz Guitar from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, in Cardiff. I also hold a distinction at grade 8 electric guitar from LCM and the Registry of Guitar Tutors.

- How much do you charge?

As above.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from teach from my home in Bethnal Green. Am willing to travel to many surrounding areas, including Hackney, Dalston, Islington, Leyton etc….

- When are you available?

Am free daytimes and early evenings, weekends and also during school holidays. Please contact me for specific times, I am flexible.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and all levels, from absolute beginner upwards!

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can prepare students for grades if they wish, up to and including grade 8.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

My main concern regarding teaching is simply to inspire students to open their minds.
Its not just about me teaching you your favourite songs, but I like students to understand the music so you can teach them to yourself, which is why there is also some attention to theory and technique. We will aim to make you a well-rounded player, comfortable and confident with the guitar, regardless of level or playing context. For the advanced student, we will work towards a more thorough knowledge of the instrument through scales, analysis of your favourite music, and generally more challenging material. Lessons are obviously tailored to the journey that each student is on, beginner or advanced, casual or serious.

The main objective is simply to have a good time learning to play. Music can enrich our lives no matter what level.

About Alex

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have over 12 years playing and 7 years teaching experience tutoring mostly 1-to-1, but I have also led workshops in schools and community projects, such as Mzansi Cymru. Past and current students really do vary from young children to adults, who may be returning to the guitar after a while or picking it up for the first time. I have played in many groups over the years, from duos to big bands, and have been fortunate enough to travel around the UK, and to Italy and India to play music, and in August 2012 I performed at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes

- Where and with whom did you train?

I spent four years training at the Royal Welsh College Of Music and Drama, during which time I studied with Paula Gardiner, Dave Cliff, Nick Weldon, Iain Ballamy, Mike Outram, Geoff Simkins. I attended a two-week intensive jazz school in Siena, Italy, where I studied with world renowned guitar players Peter Bernstein (USA), Ben Monder (USA) and Mike Moreno (USA). I also studied classical guitar with Mike Lease.
