Primarily for beginners, I work on sound and tone production for the first few lessons, moving soon on to producing notes of equal length and finding tempo. This sets up beginner trombone players to start building the skillsets needed for later on in the player's time learning the instrument.
However, when working with students who already play the instrument, or have some musical experience, I would normally prepare a lesson in which I can make an assessment of the skill level of the player, determining at what level to start tuition. I would then move on to working with the student on areas of weakness through both performance pieces and exercises.
I would normally work students through the ABRSM system of grading, meaning that up to a diploma-grade standard, there will be specific performance pieces and exercises to work toward each term.
I am a professional trombone player, based and working in the London area. I've had many years of experience performing as part of orchestras jazz big bands and various other smaller ensembles, teaching at both primary and secondary school level in both individual and group brass lessons.
