All Levels Clarinet and Beginner Flute/Recorder/Saxophone Lessons in South London with an Experienced Freelance Orchestral Musician

I'm an active freelance musician, playing with major orchestras in London, around the UK and elsewhere in Europe. I tailor the lessons to every individual and ensure a positive learning atmosphere for students of all ages and levels. Music has always been my passion and being able to express it has been an immense privilege.

My main instrument is clarinet but can also provide lessons in recorder, flute and saxophone. I follow the ABRSM Syllabus and can prepare you for a Graded Exam or a Diploma. In my teaching I refer to Paul Harris' Simultaneous Learning Method, which has proved to be the most successful technique.

I have graduated with distinction in undergraduate programme BMus(Hons) and postgraduate programme MA at the Royal Academy of Music. I have also been awarded DipRAM which is an institutional prize awarded to students for an outstanding performance in a Postgraduate Level Final Recital. During my final undergraduate year I also completed an Erasmus Exchange at the Paris Conservatory.

I teach at home in the beautiful surroundings of Lammas Green Estate, but am happy to travel to counties nearby such as Southwark and Bromley. Travelling is possible, but an additional fee to cover the expenses is required

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualifications verified and response guaranteed. Jernej will plan your first lesson with care.

I have been visiting teacher in German School in Richmond, Every Child a Musician in Newham, Waldorf School Ljubljana and Music School Idrija (both in Slovenia) and have held educational workshops with children from Netley Primary School in London.

Together with a violist and educator Jill Valentine I have co-founded a teaching collective Lammas Green Music Studio, where we provide individually tailored lessons to students of all ages and abilities in our area. We also encourage classical music though community events and presentations for children.

I am an experienced orchestral musician and regularly perform with major London orchestras (London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, Sinfonia of London), other UK orchestras (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National, Halle, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Bournemouth Symphony) and orchestras abroad (Slovenian Philharmonic, Irish Chamber, RTE Symphony, Wexford Opera).

I hold an up-to-date DBS Check provided by Every Child a Musician and can provide it on request.

If required, I am also able to include in my lessons knowledge of French, German, Slovene and Serbian language.

Jernej is a brilliant clarinettist and teacher. He has helped me pinpoint my weakness and has encouraged me to play the music that I enjoy. He has helped me improve the cohesion of my playing by coming up with specific warm-up exercises and by giving me ways of approaching tricky passages. For every fault in my playing he will come up with a way to tackle it, resulting in rapid improvements in my playing. He never fails to send a follow up email after each lesson detailing my next steps, helping

I have known Jernej since I took the clarinet for the first time. His teaching method is wonderful and inspirational. The classes are great fun as he brings new ideas and techniques all the time. He encourages me with positive feedback all the time. After each class, he follows up with a written email with the main points from the session. Very professional and likeable.

Interview with Jernej

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
Jernej — The first time I heard clarinet was while listening to one of the discs of my dad's collection called The Masters of Classical Music and Their Works. There were around 40 CDs and while they were all brilliant, the one that made the most impression on me was Gerlad Finzi's Clarinet Concerto. The mellow and smooth sound of clarinet attracted me immediately and the decision to take on this instrument was made!
QUESTION 02 | 08
Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Jernej — I have lately been focusing on late Beethoven String Quartets by Takacs Quartet which I happily replay and explore further. The expression in these works is profound and the variety of sounds always surprising. If I am ever stuck while looking for characters, they are my best companion to broaden my imagination.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Jernej — This would be without a doubt Vademecum by a French clarinettist of 20th century Pauk Jeanjean. It comprises routine exercises that focus on a specific clarinet technique. The work is rigorous but bears fruit long-term!
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Jernej — Piano is one of the most popular instruments, but also the most difficult to master. The amount of practice time and dedication that highly skilled pianists have endured is immense and always inspires me to excel in my musicianship and practice etiquette.
QUESTION 05 | 08
What are your keys to success?
Jernej — Patience, awareness and well-being, both personal and in relationships.
QUESTION 06 | 08
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
Jernej — I would love to have a geeky meeting with three clarinettists: Anton Stadler, who Mozart wrote Concerto and Quintet for, Richard Mühlfeld, who Brahms wrote Trio op. 114 and Sonatas op. 120 for, and Reginald Kell, whose clarinet playing has been most impressive and vocal to me. It would be fantastic to chat to them about the their relationship with their instruments in those days and what really mattered for them in their music making.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
Jernej — While studying in 2014 I attended an orchestral academy in Schleswig-Holstein, a region in the north of Germany. It's an academy that joins musicians from all over the world for 5 weeks playing various orchestral music with different conductors. We've done multiple concerts in Kiel and Lübeck, and during these grew together as one big family. Our final concert was a performance of Shostakovich 5th Symphony in Berlin, which ends with an ecstatic finale and I will never forget this vivid moment of looking around the orchestra and seeing every young musician on stage so committed to classical music, giving their best even after 5 weeks of hard work and tough schedule. It was a clear indicator for me that the true music is reflected by commitment and passion from each individual that radiates it. When a moment occurs and I'm not so motivated to practice or perform at my best I remember myself of that energetic moment that was created in Berlin on the final evening of the festival and it restores my love for music and lifts me up.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
Jernej — I always try to help my students achieve their full potential and encourage them on their musical journey. Everyone is at a different stage in their development, myself included. I make sure that pupils realise that we learn and improve together with each day, one step at a time.
