An experienced and professional academic tutor with an extensive background in the Cambridge ESOL exams (IELTS, FCE, CAE, CPE). I have an excellent record of helping people reach their language goals.
From my experience IELTS students face two significant challenges; confidence and speed, and trying to deal with both at the same time can be extremely confusing!
When helping someone with either the general or the academic version of the exam, throughout every step we take, we explain the importance of what you need to know, how you accomplish it and the effects it has on the score. There’s so much confusing and contradictory information available to students both online and face to face, more often than not people lack the confidence because they’re not sure what exactly they need to be doing.
Before any classes happen, the first thing for me to do is understand your goals, your strengths, your weaknesses and any deadlines you have – I do this to make sure the help given is effective and efficient.
The first thing we offer you is a 60-minute “needs” assessment where we identify all the problematic areas that you may have. Commonly new students have problems such as:
> making sure their grammatical response matches the task
> structuring a coherent and cohesive answer to writing task 2
> identifying the features in task 1, and how to write about them
> improving my speaking fluency, intonation and meaning – it’s more than just vocabulary!
In this session we not only identify problematic areas, but also suggest out-of-class language habits that can contribute to you feeling more confident with using English, whether it's spoken, listened to, written or read.
...you'll learn about your strengths and weaknesses
...I’ll develop a study plan for you
...I’ll give advice about study habits in between classes
It's also a good time to ask me any questions you have (hopefully many!) and also decide if I'm the right teacher for you. There's never any pressure to continue I'm very happy to give you any advice you need to keep you on track and self-study.
The classes are dynamic, clear and professionally structured, but more importantly each one is focused exactly on your needs. This means that everything we do can be related to the areas that you need help with. In each of the classes, we have:
> a homework review section – going through each of the assigned tasks, identifying problems and introducing material to deal with those issues.
> an input section – where we go through a new task, explaining each step and why it’s important.
> a student-led section – here the student leads the classes, practises an example and demonstrates their understanding. Don’t worry – the teacher is there to guide you!
> homework – focused specifically on the material introduced in the task.
Material for the class will either come from a range of up-to-date and appropriate books/sources that will be chosen specifically for you. Usually a class will use up to 6 or more books to make sure you get the right information. Or, information will be written specifically for you based on your strengths and weaknesses.
All material is included in the price, along with any audio or answer keys that are needed. All answer keys (for things such as reading/listening) will be fully explained for you to self-study away from the classroom. Also, unlike many other teachers, when the class finishes, you'll still receive support from me if you have any questions about the class material, or other language problems you experience in day-to-day life.
We make sure that area of help that is taught is explained thoroughly – with many examples, types of practice and review. The confidence you will gain comes from understanding the reasons behind each part of the exam and how you can demonstrate to the examiner
Above all, we hope you can understand this; confidence comes before speed.
Yes, the test has a time limit and there’s no way to avoid it. Don’t worry! By understanding the task, realising the instructions, and controlling your English, we promise you’ll feel more confident. By practising all of this, you’ll be faster and feel more prepared for the exam.
From being inspired by great and sincere teachers myself, I can understand the challenge from the student's point of view, and because of this, I have never let a student down or failed to give an answer which will help.
I'm a mature, highly-qualified and internationally respected language teacher with over 18 years of experience, helping beginners to specialized professionals improve their language and overcome the difficulties that they face using English – both for the Cambridge ESOL exams, and for general English.

> Professionals that need IELTS as part of their job requirements, such as nurses, doctors and medical specialists entering the American, British or Australian health services
> Individuals (along with their families) migrating to another country and need to achieve a certain IELTS score as part of their points requirements.
But regardless of your reasons, we are there to understand what type of help you need and make sure that it is delivered to make sure you achieve your goals.

Finally I can start my Masters and I never thought an online class would be so effective. I really appreciated all the notes you had sent me and I was able to review these before the exam. You were always honest with me and I realised how important it was to re-write my work, which helped to make me more confident and faster. They were fun classes and I felt like a person and not just a students. Great!
