- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Most of my pupils are studying for A levels, IGCSEs, GCSEs or IB in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, but I have also taught students from primary school students through to undergraduates and mature students.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE, iGCSE, IB, AS, A2 for all exam boards. University entrance exams. First year undergraduate Physics.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Tutorials online are conducted over Skype or FaceTime using Scribbler. This means students can see me and talk to me via a video call. Scribbler is an interactive white board used by both myself and my student, it is web based so only a flash enabled web browser is required (it doesn't work on an iPad). This allows students to work with me on problems, and keep their tutorial notes in one place for revision. I also used a wide range a range of animations and online resources, which are carefully selected to improve understanding.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I quickly find the problems that students are having, then rebuild their knowledge or correct their misconceptions. I then build a clear and easy to understand a picture. I set challenging questions and assignments to drive, encourage and push a student outside of tutorials. This helps to carefully assess a student's knowledge and give them a clear understanding. I will work through problem solving, examination techniques and confidence building exercises to improve students' performance in any exam. Ultimately driving students towards their best, while making the learning process fun and enjoyable.
Andrew is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am a fully qualified teacher with over nine years teaching and tuition experience. I am also a practicing physicist, producing cutting edge research for future solar technology. Working as an examiner has given me a detailed understanding of the major exam boards in the UK. So if you, or someone you know, wants to learn physics and get higher grades please get in touch.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I have an up-to-date DBS which is available on request.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I am a professional tutor with ten years teaching and tutoring experience. In 2005 I graduated from Leeds University with a BSc Physics, having achieved the second highest mark in the year. I received a PGCE (post graduate certificate in education) from Nottingham University in 2007. After which I completed an NQT followed by two years at the Brunts School in Mansfield, with particular success teaching GCSE and A-level. In 2011 I started tutoring part time while studying for a Masters in Nanoscience from the school of Chemistry at Nottingham University. I graduated in 2012 having achieved the highest mark in the history of the course (79.3%), while my tutees have made massive improvements.
I have obtained a PhD in chemical physics. This involved using X-ray based techniques to analyse molecules and nanostructures on surfaces. The primary goal was to investigate charge transfer between these nanostructures and various surfaces. Charge transfer is very important for solar cells and organic LEDs and his research leads to fundamental understanding of the physics behind these technologies. Part of this work involved attending MAX-Lab IV in Lund, Sweden and Soleil in Paris to which involved using a synchrotron, which is an X-ray producing particle accelerator. I hope that this research will lead to developing new technologies for light flexible displays and low cost solar power generation.
Now that I have finished my PhD, tutoring is now my full time job.

“Andrew, is definitely and amazing tutor, he had helped me understand physics in more depth, and whenever I am struggling in a section he helps me by demonstrating in every single way so that I can understand it more. Also he provides me with further difficult questions because if I can do them with no problem then the exam should be very easy. He is a fantastic person and a lovely tutor.”
“Andy is a very qualified tutor. He demonstrates the tutorial with visual materials and an electronic board which is very useful for a better understanding. I was really struggled with physics but when I started my tutorials with him I have developed my performance very well and I got a distinction in my final examination for my first semester. I strongly recommend anyone who struggles with Physics to contact him.”
“I received a D in january and really struggled to understand where the complex points of Physics came from. But within the first couple of weeks of having Andy, my basic understanding of multiple areas in physics was enhanced greatly. My results speak for him, as i got an A in my physics A levels, only several marks off an A-star, and i am now going to Manchester University. Thank You Andy!”
“Needed an A for university and ended up getting an A*. Says it all really. Great teacher, puts everything across really well and in different ways so you really get the grasp of it. Gives vital exam techniques which really pay off and was exactly what I needed. Would highly recommend to anyone if you are considering getting a tutor.”
“Andrew has been teaching my son in three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Maths. They have a great rapport and have used both Skype and face to face lessons. In the lead up to my sons first GSCE paper Andrew sourced papers and assessed results which led to an A* at 98%. Long may it continue.”
“Andy has tutored my son for about 6 months increasing his initial AS level results by 3 grades by the time of summer exams. He is very punctual, knowledgeable and explains the subject in a manner that is easy to understand. We would recommend Andy to any student who is studying A level Physics or Chemistry.”
“Andrew is an excellent tutor. I enlisted his help when my daughter was struggling with Maths following a lengthy period of missing school due to ill health. Andrew had a very pleasant manner and helped to improve my daughters' confidence and skills in a very short period of time. I would definitely recommend Andrew to anyone needing a Tutor and would happily call upon his help again, should the need arise.”
“Due to medical issues I missed a lot of school, over half of my GCSE year in fact. Andy really helped me catch up and improve my knowledge, bringing my grades up from an E in physics to a B. Also bringing my Chemistry and Biology grades up. His lessons are as informative as they are interesting. I never had a boring lesson and he's very reliable. Even when a face to face tuition wasn't available we did tutorial over skype which was equally as good.
“Andrew is professional, reliable and everything you would wish for from an excellent tutor. He has brought the subject to life for my son and he is now much more confident about his forthcoming A2 Physics exam. I am so impressed with my son's improvement in Physics that I am inviting Andrew back in September to tutor my daughter in GCSE Maths.”
“Andrew is professional, polite and punctual and friendly and puts a student at ease. He can expertly tailor study to meet the overall goals and will go the extra mile with back up materials and support outside of the sessions. I would recommend him to anyone.”
