« Andrew looks at music from every conceivable angle: technique, the student's wishes and requirements, but above all musically. In practical terms he seems to have an endless supply of methods for solving problems. He invariably hits on the appropriate solution for someone approaching a particular piece, and very often I come away from a lesson with some door unlocked, and the renewed confidence and pleasure that brings. He is an extremely pleasant person and I can recommend him wholeheartedly. »

Andrew - Morningside - Music Theory

Methodology

Looking for an experienced and friendly piano teacher? Get a great start to your playing career with a teacher of more than 15 years teaching experience, or develop your skills beyond Grade 8 to professional performance level

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Classical, Jazz and Mainstream piano styles, Chamber Music, Music Theory

- Tell me about your qualifications.

B-MUS (Hons), University of Edinburgh
M-MUS, University of Edinburgh
ATCL Diploma, Trinity College London
AMUS TCL Diploma (Music Theory), Trinity College London

- How much do you charge?

Normally £45 per hour, although for lessons booked in blocks of 10 there is a £5 discount per hour/lesson. I can travel but this usually adds £10 to a lesson to cover the travel time

- Where do you teach?

I mainly teach from home on the border between Greenwich and Lewisham, and I also teach piano one day a week in Notting Hill. I teach on an excellent Yamaha piano. A good and reponsive instrument is vital for students to enjoy their lessons, whilst also allowing more advanced students to really explore and understand the nuances of technique and their effect on the sound. Not very easy to tell with a poor instrument! Younger students always enjoy the sound this good piano makes. I prefer to teach from home (with young students especially) as this makes the lesson more of an 'occaision' , although this is not mandatory. Parental involvement is very helpful in ensuring continued progress in difficult times. My teaching room has all the teaching facilities I need, including music, computer, recording facilities and more. I can teach and travel within Lewisham, Greenwich, Deptford Bridge, Catford, Blackheath, Foresthill, Lee and Notting Hill.

- When are you available?

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday all day/evening til 9pm (weekly)
Thursday/Friday all day/evening til 9pm (fortnightly)
Saturday/Sunday all day (fortnightly)
I can be flexible with times! I usually follow school holidays, although some students continue by negotiation at these times.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and stages. My students range from absolute beginners to Music College Post-Graduate level. I also enjoy teaching adults.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

ABRSM grades 1-8
ABRSM and Trinity Advanced Performance Diplomas
GCSE
A-level (and A-S)
Local, Regional and National Piano Competitions

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I can do occasional lesson on Skype, although this is usually just when a student has an exam or other performance coming up and we are unable to meet in person.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

The most important thing is to enjoy your playing! Aproaching the piano with the correct attitude and method will help ensure this, and this is where the guidance of a good teacher counts. Feel free to message me to discuss what you would like to get out of your piano playing and music making, and I look forwards to hearing from you.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching piano for nearly 20 years, to both beginners and music college/university level students with everything between. Many of my students are working towards grade exams, GCSE and A levels, whilst some of my more advanced students have gone on to study at institutes such as Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity College London, Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities, and the Roma Conservatoire in Italy. I also teach enthusiastic adult learners, one of whom has just completed is life-long ambition to play the complete Bach Preludes and Fugues!

I have been a Faculty member on the Chetham's Piano Summer School, the biggest piano summer school in Europe. I give masterclasses to students, most recently in Latvia as part of a course in Piano Pedagogy.

It is my most sincere aim to encourage students to realise their potential, whilst enjoying themselves as much as possible and learning at a pace comfortable for them.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes

- Where and with whom did you train?

Richard Beauchamp (St Mary's Music School)
Murray McLachlan (Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama)
Norma Fisher
David Wilde
I have also participated in masterclasses with Yonty Solomon, Berndt Goetzke, Martimo Tirimo, and many others.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Full member of EPTA (European Piano Teacher's Association
Piano Secretary for the Edinburgh Competition Festival (2006-13)

- Tell me about some of your current students.

London - I have a number of adult and younger students, some in Greenwich and some in Notting Hill (including a local minister who is preparing for his Grade 8 exam and his daughter who is preparing for her Grade 4!). I also teach piano at the City Academy, Hackney, and many of these students are working towards 'Project Band', aimed at getting young musicians playing a mixture of musical styles (jazz, pop/rock) together in groups, which is a lot of fun and quite different to the usual classical route.

University of Edinburgh - I currently teach students to Diploma level on a fortnightly basis up in Scotland. I also teach a Professor of Astronomy (who has just completed the 48 Bach Preludes and Fugues), a couple of 11 year olds who are sitting their ABRSM Grade 8 exams this year, and some much younger students who are blazing along at a fantastic rate which is fun. Some of my other students are doing A-level and Advanced Higher exams, whilst also performing (and often doing very well) in music competition festivals. It is important to note that other students play purely for fun, with no exams or competitions in mind, and that the most rewarding thing for me is to see enthusiasm and progress.

I highly recommend Andrew as a fantastic teacher who makes every lesson a very enjoyable experience. He has been my teacher from when I started to play piano at the age of 7, till now (at the age of 17). During this time, Andrew has inspired me to play; he has always been very encouraging and supportive. He has also introduced me to a wide repertoire of music. Two years ago, I achieved a Distinction for my Grade 8 and I have also managed to win several competitions under his guidance.
