« You have been an absolute wonderful tutor and your love for the flute and kindness has made every lesson enjoyable, not to mention your warm sense of humour. It's not often I leave a lesson of ANYTHING chuckling to myself! Your encouragement has really been invaluable in motivating me to try again & AGAIN for that perfect embouchure. But you've actually taught me much more than how to play the flute, you've actually helped me to truly appreciate and understand music in ITSELF! You're a brilliant teacher. »

Andrew - Roundhay - Flute OR Andrew - Leeds - Flute

Methodology

Hi there!
Just get in touch for a chat about how I can help you learn any aspect of music tuition. I can help you whether you are an absolute beginner flute player or a diploma flute student.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach flute lessons, piccolo lessons and music theory lessons. However, I am principal of Roundhay Music (concealed information) and can arrange for tuition on any aspect of music tuition and to whatever standard.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Graduate in Music from Huddersfield University (G.Mus.) where I studied for 3 years
Licentiate Performers Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London (L.T.C.L.) on Flute
Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Flute Studies from Royal Academy of Music where I studied for 2 years

- How much do you charge?

I charge a fee of £36.00 per hour and this is 'pro rata', so a 1/2hour lesson is £18.00 and a 3/4hour lesson is £27.00 etc. If you are an advanced student who has taken Grade 8, I charge £44.40 but I do offer a reduction to those who are out of work. Lessons can also be spread out by prior arrangement.
Students and parents can discuss at a consultation lesson what is best for them and what suits their pocket. Tuition is given on an individual basis and lessons can be on a fortnightly or weekly basis, or as often as you would like. If you would like chamber music coaching, then the hourly fee is split equally between the members of the group.
If you cannot make your pre arranged lesson time, all I ask is that you give me at least 24 hours notice, so that it gives me time to swap students around to fit you in when it is convenient for both of us either in that week or the following week.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my studios in Roundhay, Leeds LS8 1AB. If you require lessons in your home, that can easily be arranged.

- When are you available?

I am available at any time. Just ask and I can usually find a way to fit you in and if not I am confident Roundhay Music will find you a qualified and experienced flute teacher who can!

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach flute at all levels and to all standards. My youngest student is 7 years old and my oldest is 88 years old!
I love to teach any ability from absolute beginner to L.R.S.M. performing diploma standard.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for any qualifications they want to study for. You tell me which syllabus you want to study from and I will teach you it!
BUT..... I also teach some of my pupils who just want to learn without the pressure of examinations.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Just get in touch and have a chat with me about what you would like to do. We can then set up a consultation lesson, which although payable at the time, is a no obligation lesson, where you can let me know if you want to go ahead later if you wish.

Super tutor

Andrew is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have experience in all sectors of education teaching mainly flute:
State sectors have included Flute teacher for South West Herts Music Service and Leeds City Council Artforms. Coached woodwind on SW Herts Orchestral Course.
Private sectors include appointments as Flute Tutor at Watford School for Girls and Ackworth Day/Boarding School in Pontefract, which also has a preparatory school. Other work in preparatory schools include Richmond House and Moorlands schools in Leeds.
My work in higher and further education establishments have included Harrogate Technical College and Barnsley College where I was asked to devise a syllabus for the flute students on the performers course.
As far as playing is concerned, I have done all manner of performing from the premier of Penderecki's Trio in London and chamber ensemble engagements as part of the Cheltenham Festival, to solo recitals with guitarists, pianists, oboists, accordionists, singers (most recently with Opera North soloists for charity events) and freelance orchestral gigs, including Orchestra D'amici (made up of players from all the major professional orchestras in the North) .
I am also Principal and Partner in a Not-For-Profit tuition organisation based in Leeds called Roundhay Music, which was established in 1987 and where I teach flute, piccolo and music theory during the day and in the evenings.
As Roundhay Music is a partner of LMEP (Leeds Music Education Partnership), I was also nominated to serve as a member of the Strategic Advisory Group (a steering committee responsible for the allocation of funds from the Arts Council for the Leeds area).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an up to date DBS enhanced disclosure.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at Huddersfield University with John Barrow (Manchester Camerata) for 3 years. Then with Sebastian Bell (London Sinfonietta) and piccolo with Richard Taylor (London Symphony Orchestra). I have attended master classes given by Geoffrey Gilbert and William Bennett.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the British Flute Society and the Musicians' Union.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My youngest is a boy of 7 years and he has just begun being just big enough to reach a full sized instrument!
My oldest is 88 years old and has been learning with me since 1990! He was my dentist since being a boy and while I was sitting in his chair having my teeth inspected one day, he asked me if I wanted to teach him the flute! I couldn't reply at the time but I hate to think what might have happened if I had refused! (Only joking Mike!)
I have lots of students of all ages. One adult student who started from scratch 3 years ago, has had no previous knowledge of music and is making great progress. She has already passed Grade 4 with distinction and soon to take Grade 5. Another student I am teaching is a T4 paraplegic adult. He wasn't sure whether he would be able to take up the flute with his paralysis but there's no problem and he is doing really well, having passed his Grade 2 exam recently. Amongst some of my other adults who are Grade 8 or above. One has already taken a diploma, another has been awarded a 1st in her BA Hons final recital at Leeds University. Some have been learning for many years and still love their lessons! (So I'm told!)

Thank you so much for teaching me music theory. You really helped me to understand it all and I couldn't have done it without you. You have also helped me to understand music classes at school for G.C.S.E. I'm sure all of these skills came to use in my flute playing too but just have done it subconsciously. Even when I thought I would never be able to understand something, you helped an awful lot so that I could.
I really appreciate what you've done to help me get those marks in my exam.

Thank you very much for teaching me over the many years.
I have definitely improved from when I first started and I have enjoyed learning and playing the flute - even the scales!
Thank you for helping me reach Grade 6. Hopefully I will be able to keep and improve on this standard in the future.

Dear Andrew,
Thank you so much for teaching me for almost eleven years! I never imagined I would be able to reach Grade 8 and without all your help I know it wouldn't have been possible. Playing the flute is one of the best decisions I have ever made and I can't thank you enough for making my lessons such an enjoyable experience (other than all the scales!) I really hope we can stay in touch and I'll definitely make an effort to keep up my playing.
Best wishes for the future.
Love Katie x

Dear Andrew,
THANK YOU for all your enthusiasm and patience in teaching Max so thoroughly in preparation for his Grade 5 music theory exam - just as you did for Katie and Nicholas.
With our very best wishes to you.
