Andrew - Stratford - Support For Students With Dyspraxia

Methodology

Hi! My name is Andrew Turner and I am a horn player and music enthusiast!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

French Horn, Tenor Horn, Trumpet, Piano and Music Theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

ABRSM - Grade 8 distinction - Horn
ABRSM - Grade 8 distinction - Piano
ABRSM - DipABRSM distinction - Horn
ABRSM - LRSM distinction - Horn
AQA - A level in academic music - A
ABRSM - Grade 8 - Music Theory

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30/hour or £20/half hour, but will give half price consultation lessons. I do not charge travel.

- Where do you teach?

I would like to either teach at a student's house or alternatively, they could come to my house in Stratford.

- When are you available?

As a musician my schedule does tend to vary. I will always be able to find a time however that will suit what you are after. Feel free to contact me for more details.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I will teach all ages and levels on the French Horn.
On the Tenor Horn, Trumpet, Cornet and Music Theory I will teach all ages up to intermediate standard - (approx. Grade 5 ABRSM)

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

ABRSM Exams

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I believe that music is about having fun. There are many important things like theory and technique to understand and master but these serve the music. The most important thing about learning an instrument or a musical dicipline is that you enjoy it. In all my lessons I strive to strike a healthy balance between hard work on technique and theory, and learning to explore the chosen subject's capabilities and enjoying the feeling of music. What ever the age or ability this is something which I see as extremely important in encouraging a student not just to progress for a little, but for life as well.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a French Horn player at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I was principal horn in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for 3 years and I freelance with many different orchestras and groups across London. I currently teach three private horn students and have taught all over London over the last 2 years.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

-Horn: Chetham's School of Music with Lizzie Davis, Tim Jackson (Liverpool Philharmonic) and Richard Watkins.
Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Jeffrey Bryant (formerly LSO).
I have also learnt with Hugh Seenan (formerly LSO), David Pyatt (LPO) and Peter Francomb (Northern Sinfonia).
-Piano: Catherine Harries and Marta Karbownicka (Chethams School of Music).
-Theory: Douglas Mason, Martin Bussey, Dr. Samuel King (Chethams School of Music) and Paul Newland (Guildhall School of Music and Drama).

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have a beginner horn student who is 7 years old and is just beginning to develop her embouchure and air flow.
I teach a boy who is 9 who is doing his Grade 3 exam.
Another pupil is an 11 year old girl french hornist who has just done her grade 3 and passed with distinction!
