There are no set arrival times – children arrive at any convenient time on their particular day(s). Students swap their completed homework for new homework when they arrive at the centre and collect their class work for the day. Students will typically be in class for 20-30 minutes per subject. During this time, parents are welcome to wait in the waiting area.
While the students are completing their class work, their homework is checked and recorded, to provide guidance where necessary.
Once the students have completed their class work, they hand the work in to be marked. Once the work has been marked, students correct any mistakes made.
Students working through the English programme read a short piece of their class work. Maths students working through lower levels of the programme are tested on their times tables/addition/subtraction skills.
All students receive regular feedback on their progress and targets. This gives both the student and me the chance to talk about their progress and goals and I can give them appropriate guidance and praise. At the end of each topic students take a test and a report on their progress is sent home.
As motivational tools we have a sticker system in place. There is an Achievement Test at the end of each level to ascertain mastery of that level.
Twice a year we have an Advanced Student Roll (ASR) ceremony with children's entertainment and guest speakers where we celebrate the students' achievements and hopefully motivate other students to aim high too.
There is a waiting area for parents, an area for younger siblings to play and books for them to read. Ample toilet facilities are also available. Parking is available close to the centre.

The Harpenden Kumon Centre is run by Ann Price who says;
"I have been running the Harpenden Kumon centre since 2000. Prior to that, I ran a Kumon centre in Redbourn for two years. Like many Kumon Instructors, I found out about Kumon after my own children joined the programme. My children gained great maths and English skills and I liked the Kumon method so much I retrained as an Instructor!
My centre is one of the larger centres in the UK. Kumon is a worldwide organisation and I have been fortunate enough to have been selected, each year since 2006, to represent the UK in Kumon's Europe and Africa Vision Club which aims to increase skills and knowledge about the Kumon method by sharing experiences from around the world. This opportunity has given me extra skills and ideas which I can use to help my students reach their full potential.
Running my Kumon centre provides me with many challenges and I love the fact that there is always something new to learn from the children, which in turn helps me constantly improve the learning experience of all my students."
At the Harpenden Kumon centre we aim to provide a warm, friendly learning environment.
