« At 29 years old, I had the crazy idea to realise a childhood dream: learning how to play violin. I met Anne Marie and at the end of my first lesson I was able to play twinkle twinkle. During three years, Anne Marie kept a good attention to details (such as this little fourth position of fingers) as well as keeping me busy and entertained with beautiful musical pieces. So if you want to learn violin, I would strongly recommend you to meet Anne Marie. »

Anne Marie - Kentish Town - Music

Methodology

I am a violin teacher based in NW5. I enjoy teaching students of any age or level and am able to travel for lessons.
I also offer chamber music coaching (string duo, trio and so on), viola, aural skills training and advice on music history subjects.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I mainly teach violin but am also happy to help with aural skills and music history.
Viola and baroque violin lessons also offered.
String chamber music coaching for any size of ensemble available

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have just finished my Phd at the Royal College of Music.
When I am not teaching I am active as a performing violinist with a focus on early music. I have experience as a professional musician playing in orchestras, leading my own chamber orchestra, and as a soloist and chamber musician.
I also have a MMus degree from Oberlin Conservatory U.S.A.

- How much do you charge?

I charge 33£ an hour when I teach at my home and 35-37£ when I travel to a students home. I am happy to give consultation lessons which I charge for at the normal lesson rate. I also offer lessons for 30,45 and 90 minutes duration to suit individual needs.
I charge slightly more for chamber music lessons.

- Where do you teach?

I teach both at my home in Tufnell Park and at pupils homes as convenient. I live very close to Tufnell Park tube station and Gospel Oak overground is not far either.
Lesson at my home generally take place during the daytime on weekdays before 6pm. At the moment I do not offer regular lessons on the weekends to ensure I have time to provide extra lessons and perform.
For weekday evening lessons I generally travel to students homes to teach particularly in the following areas: Kentish Town, Camden, Tufnell Park, Archway, Finchley, Hampstead, Maida Vale, Holloway. However I am happy to travel further if needed.

- When are you available?

As my availability constantly changes do get in touch.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach students of any age and level.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I have prepared students for both ABRCM and TrinityGuildhall exams. I have also helped students prepare from competitions within their schools and as part of the North London Festival.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have offered advice on music history and related research via SKYPE and would be happy to do so again.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

It is never too late to begin learning the violin. It is a challenging but rewarding instrument to learn. When practising aim at quality rather than quantity. 10-15 every day helps build muscle memory which is essential particularly for beginners. For advances students longer practise sessions are needed but if time is an issue it is much better to keep it short than try and cram a few times a week.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

Over the years I have learned from some amazing teachers and I try to pass on to my students all that I have learned. I have taken some pedagogy courses, but the best experience I have had came from observing what leading teachers do to make their students succeed.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a DBS check

- Where and with whom did you train?

I originally have a degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Music where with I studied with now prof. Sergei Azizian. After graduation I went on to take a Masters in Historical Performance at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio U.S.A. While there I also studied modern violin with prof. Milan Vitek. I have participated in various masterclasses and summer courses with leading teachers and took lessons for a while with Nikolai Znaider.

Anne Marie is a brilliant and patient tutor that I would highly recommend to all adult learners whether they are starting from scratch or restarting the violin as I was.
