An experienced teacher of over 15 years wishing to support learners in the local area. A committed tutor who believes that all children are enriched through learning, regardless of background and circumstances..

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the the core skills of reading, writing and mathematics for children aged between 7 to 14. This has included a wider range of ages dependent upon specific needs and abilities. As a teacher I am also aware and able to teach all of the subjects on the primary curriculum. Through working in an all through academy, I am also able to support the KS3 curriculum in English and maths.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am a fully qualified teacher of 15 years experience. From previous employment I am also qualified to degree level in Business Studies; I am also qualified in Applied Biology (H.N.C.) and Science (O.N.C.)

- How much do you charge?

Sessions cost £25.00 per hour. This includes all planning, resourcing and delivery. It also includes a report on the session which includes session content, tutee confidence and their performance. The first session is free for an informal consultation to find out the tutee's needs and the parent's desired outcomes from tuition. The following session will be an assessment of needs and strengths within the specified area of learning; this information is provided in a report which then outlines the focus and outcomes for following sessions.

- Where do you teach?

Teaching can occur at the tutee's home, or alternatively at our purpose made learning suite. I am whiling to travel 20 miles from home which includes places such as Newark, Bingham, Southwell, Nottingham, or Mansfield. All local villages such as Aslockton, Saxendale, Cropwell Bishop, Cotgrave, Ollerton, Bilsthorpe are included in this area.

- When are you available?

Availability upon request, but includes day sessions (homeschooling), and afternoons to early evening.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Children between the ages of 7 to 14. However this is flexible upon need. For instance younger pupils wishing to improve and extend skills, or older pupils who require development of their foundation level skills.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Primary school SATs preparation, Secondary school transition examinations for streaming and options choices. 11+ entrance examination prepartion.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Two simple rules...
1. No question is a silly question
2. We learn through our mistakes.
Two simple outcomes...
A sense of satisfaction through what can be achieved.
A determination to make the future what you want it to be.

- What kind of experience do you have?

My experiences of working with children includes a wide variety of circumstances and needs. My current tutees range from primary school to early secondary. I work with tutees who are either at school, or are being home schooled. The range of abilities taught include those children who wish to excel in their chosen subjects, through to children who find learning a specific subject difficult and wish to improve their performance. Within the children I support, some children face specific barriers to learning such as autism and dyslexia.
as a classroom teacher and member of the management team, I have taught in several settings from inner city environments to surburban based schools. Whilst in the classroom my academic results were strong which were created from outstanding teaching practice, and strong relationships with children and parents. I have shared my passion for teaching by developing and supporting both new teachers to the profession, and those teachers wishing to improve their classroom practice.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

- Where and with whom did you train?

Training for teaching qualification was a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (S.C.I.T.T.) course provided by the Nottingham Trent University.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

This is the story of a single tutee which I support, however I feel it illustrates my passion, philosophy and expertise to enhance learning for children.

I started working with a student about two months ago. Their current experience of school life was quite upsetting for them, particularly in terms of their reading. They felt so low about the value of reading and how it made them feel about themselves that they no longer wished to go near a book.

Throughout the course of our sessions, we looked at reading from different viewpoints and perspectives, always with the positive and enriching experiences it could give. We tied in personal interests with the message that reading is for all, regardless of the level of skill and particular barriers encountered. For this student we looked at dealing with, and overcoming the barrier of dyslexia, and considered it as just one part of the wider skill sets of reading.

At the same time we concentrated and promoted their excellent comprehension skills and empathy for characters and events in the stories we shared.

Our last session together was a watershed moment. The student had independently read a whole book of their choice (only the second book they have ever completed) and written a review of the story to send to the author. This particular student then gave me the book to pass onto other dyslexic readers I work with, to encourage them; at the same time they set themselves the reading target of 'tougher books' to tackle next.
I have not written this to highlight my impact for this student, but rather to highlight just what potential this student has, and had lost along the way. As I said to her, those attributes and abilities were always there for her; together we have brought them from 'the back to the front'.
I cannot say how proud and excited I am for this child, but I know that in valuing herself more, the number of her opportunities to experience success has grown immensely.
