Barry - Tanworth - Music Theory

Methodology

I am a semi-professional musician and tutor. I have conducted many brass groups and bands as well as working at the top level. I also belong to a small group of medieval and Tudor musicians called A Merrie Noyse (see (concealed information) and have lot of fun playing the instruments and going to different festivals. I have a lot of patience and use encouragement and example to help students achieve their best.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the range of brass instruments, conducting and Renaissance woodwind as well as music theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold three ABSM diplomas in music and brass teaching as well as theory up to degree level. I have a post graduate diploma in psychotherapy and counselling. See (concealed information) for my professional qualifications and profile.

- How much do you charge?

My charges tend to be £25.00 per hour for music tuition and related activity. Life coaching and Interview skills are £55.00 per hour inclusive.

- Where do you teach?

I teach in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. I travel to students' homes or schools. Mileage is charged at the standard rate, however I do not charge for the time spent travelling

- When are you available?

I work during the week and some evenings. I work Saturday afternoons fortnightly. I am not available on Monday or Tuesdays, but work through most school holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach across the lifespan including preschoolers from beginners to post graduate diploma level.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Any.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

For on-line tutoring I can use SKYPE with instant messaging, email or video link.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have extensive experience working with individuals and groups of all ages and ability. As part of A Merrie Noyse we teach key stage 2 Tudor history and music with practical workshops and experiential learning. I have conducted some top level brass bands including the Sun Life and Desford bands.

After graduating from the Birmingham school of music I became a freelance trumpet player and conductor. In 1979 I began conducting the Telford brass band then moved to the city of Birmingham brass in 1981. In 1983 I secured a post with the Sunlife brass band who were rated one of the top ten brass bands in the UK. I spent three years with the Sun Life band and during that time helped raise their profile further and commissioned new works for brass and performed in prestigious concerts and recordings throughout the country. I have continued working as a freelance conductor and player, however, in 2003 bcame involved with “early music” and began playing recorders, bagpipes, hurdy gurdy, renaissance guitar and shawms. I currently play with A Merrie Noyse ((concealed information) and Diabolus in Musica and specialise in music of the renaissance. I conduct a 10 piece brass group in the West Midlands called Pheonix Brass.
