I am an experienced and approachable tutor, who helps the ancient world come alive for students of all ages. If you are struggling with your current course or worried about upcoming exams, then please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
My area of expertise is the Ancient World, from Achaemenid Persia and the golden age of Classical Greece, through to the rise and demise of the Roman Empire. I follow the syllabuses set out by the OCR, and cover Classical Civilisation, Ancient History and Ancient Greek at GCSE, A-Level, and Undergraduate level.
I have a strong personal interest in Modern History, and can tutor at both GCSE and A-Level.
I also offer general guidance in essay writing, and proofreading for longer pieces of coursework - particularly useful if you are submitting example essays to universities.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a DPhil from Oxford University, my thesis discussing the cultural and religious significance of dreams in ancient Greece. Before that I completed my Master of Studies (Distinction), also at Oxford, specialising in areas including historiography, epigraphy, and Greek religion. My academic career began at St. Andrews, where I received an MA (Hons) First Class in Ancient History. The flexibility of the Scottish university system also allowed me to take modules in Modern and Mediaeval history (as well as Economics!).
- How much do you charge?
I charge a fee of £25/hour for both tutoring and essay assistance/proofreading. If you are interested in pursuing a prolonged course (for example, a full term of A-Level tuition) then I do have optional block booking rates, available upon request.
- Where do you teach?
I teach exclusively online, via Skype, using a dedicated office in my home. I live in a rural area and the money I save on commuting can be passed on to you.
- When are you available?
I am available weekdays and weekends, at times to suit you. The principal benefit of online tuition is the flexibility to teach at any time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from age 13 right through to Undergraduate level. But if you fancy yourself as a child genius then don't be afraid to get in touch!
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I teach via Skype from a dedicated office in my home, with reliable fibre broadband, a webcam, and a microphone. I know that some people feel uncomfortable having their webcam active, so it is also possible to have a purely oral lesson via Skype if you prefer.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Never give up! If something's not difficult, then it won't give you any satisfaction once you succeed.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been fortunate enough to tutor the bright minds at Oxford University at Undergraduate Level, yet my real passion is lighting the fire in those who have had no previous introduction to Classics, and I am hoping to take on students from diverse backgrounds and at different ages.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a full ACRO Police check
