Biochemist, Researcher (PhD) and Teacher who is Passionate about Health Science, Knowledge Sharing and Human Interaction

Methodology

Chemistry and Biology imprint most aspects of human life, from the environment we live in to our inner self: the brain we use to think. Chemistry and Biology define our physiology and pathology as well as the nature around us. As a teacher, I want to enable students to see the world through the fascination of these two disciplines, allowing them to develop critical thinking and curiosity about their innumerable applications, hence understanding the world they live in. Throughout my career, I have adopted a few techniques along with pedagogical guidelines. I describe some of those herein.
1- First, simplicity of the material is key. The concept of simplicity of the material is emphasised every time a new topic is introduced. Allowing the students to feel self-sufficient is a first step towards their success and better learning. To achieve this objective, learning goals are clearly set prior to every class. This provides the students with a solid and gratifying educational experience and also reminds me, the teacher, of the concepts I wish to convey in the lesson.
2- Second, I prepare my material so that it is visual and accessible. I always prepare my slides in advance, combined with interactive discussion. This allows me to break the material into small, accessible, pieces.
3- Third, when planning a course, I ensure that subjects fit together as coherently as possible and explicitly build on earlier material. For example, it is necessary to understand the biophysical and biochemical characteristics of amino-acids to learn protein folding and structure.
2- Fourth, I always try to be accessible, supportive and respectful.

Background

I have a PhD in Biochemistry and 8 years of experience in teaching of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Biological Chemistry. I have taught under various circumstances, in several countries, instructing students from primary schools all the way through to graduate level. My most recent experiences were with A-level students in Cambridge (UK) and graduate students at McGill University (Canada). One of my A-level students have wrote to me this: "I'm pleased to say that thanks to your amazing help my exams went very well and I met the high grades I was required in order to study chemistry at university! I'm very grateful to you Farah, because without your help I wouldn't have managed at all."
I love what I do, and, despite being a very challenging profession, teaching is one of the most rewarding careers.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

2015-2018
Lecturer, part of CHEM514 Biophysical Chemistry
McGill University, Department of Chemistry, Montreal, Canada
10-20 students from different backgrounds and levels (graduate and undergraduate students).
Objective: introducing the students to the basic principals of a new class of proteins (Intrinsically Disordered Proteins) and exposing them to some biochemical and biophysical tools used by researchers in the field to investigate and manipulate them.
Developed a new material for new course content.

2013-2015
Teacher, General Chemistry, A-level (College)
University of Cambridge, United Kingdom
Less than 10 students aiming at applying to the University of Cambridge admission tests.
Objective: providing an introduction to physical and organic chemistry.
Students’ satisfaction demonstrated by their high accomplishment.

2007-2010
Tutor, Biological Chemistry for undergraduate students
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland
10-20 undergraduate students.
Objective: introducing the students to different molecular, biochemical and biophysical approaches for elucidating and modulating the function of proteins in complex biological processes.
My role during this course was to supervise and tutor students, as well as correct and grade exams.

2007-2009
Teacher, Biotechnology laboratory for undergraduate students
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland
40 undergraduate students.
Objective: providing the theory and practice of expression, purification and biochemical characterisation of a recombinant protein in both bacterial and mammalian host systems for protein expression.
I prepared and gave this course for two consecutive academic years, and helped preparing the course for the third year.
I was responsible of preparing the experimental protocols, laboratory material as well as designing and grading exams questions. The students learned basic techniques of chromatography, mass spectrometry, circular dichroism, and enzyme kinetics.

2006-2012
Supervisor, graduate and final year undergraduate research projects
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, and
University of Cambridge, Department of Chemistry, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Explained theory behind experimental approaches
Demonstrated laboratory techniques and supervised practical work
Assisted students with data analysis and interpretation
Provided constructive feedback on project report drafts.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

2010-ongoing
Research Associate
University of Cambridge, Department of Chemistry, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Laboratories of Prof. Christopher Dobson and Prof. Michele Vendruscolo
Studying the structural basis of intrinsically disordered proteins’ aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases

2013-ongoing
Visiting Scholar
McGill University, Department of Chemistry, Montreal, Canada.
Laboratory of Prof. Anthony Mittermaier
Leading collaborative projects between the University of Cambridge and McGill University.

2005-2010
PhD research project
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland
Laboratory of Prof. Hilal Lashuel
A battery of biochemical, biophysical and structural biology approaches were employed to characterise the true quaternary structure distribution of MIF in solution, to engineer and characterise novel variants utilised as tools to probe the structure function of MIF in vitro, and to identify novel inhibitors of MIF.

2004
