Biochemistry graduate with previous teaching experience offering GCSE and A level biology tuition

Methodology

My teaching is aimed mainly at GCSE students, but can also extend to A level standard. In order to make the vast amount of information needed for exams seem less daunting, I like to break down courses into individual topics and sections so that each topic can be thoroughly mastered before moving on to the next. I believe that no question is too simple to ask, and that the best way to learn and succeed is to really understand a subject rather than memorising individual facts, which is reflected in my thorough and detailed approach to teaching

Experience

I am a recent Biochemistry graduate from the University of Bristol. I have spent a year working in the biotechnology industry where I was able apply the scientific knowledge I have gained throughout my school and university career to real life problems, which has enhanced my passion for teaching the subjects. I have previous experience with one on one tutoring up to GCSE level, where students have achieved A*s and As.

Skills

Analysis and problem solving
• Interpreting scientific data throughout my placement at PsiOxus Therapeutics has taught me to have a keen eye for detail when analysing data and looking for trends in order to make informed decisions about future directions of research.
• Commitment to academic tutoring has shown me that each pupil learns in a different way. Therefore, coming up with varied ways to teach the same content is essential.
• Participating in problem-based learning throughout my Biochemistry studies has helped me to develop a logical and rational approach to dealing with problems, and trying to come up with the best solution possible.

Team work and Communication
• Organising the finance for my team during ‘Young Enterprise’ meant it was crucial to work closely with my team mates to make sure our accounts were accurate and always up to date.
• Working in a team throughout my Biochemistry degree to design and carry out experiments. This involves the fair delegation of tasks and making sure that we all communicate clearly with each other to ensure all our tasks are completed to our best ability within the time constraints we are given.
Leadership
• Selected to be part of the senior prefect team in sixth form as ‘Head of Year Nine’. Responsibilities included leading assemblies and organising drop in sessions. Also helped to coordinate a student council for the year group.
• Worked as a maths teaching assistant. This involved checking on pupil’s individual progress and managing small workshops outside of the class to help pupils with particularly challenging topics.

Creativity
• Involved in the ‘Young Enterprise’ scheme. This centred around working in a group to come up with an innovative idea that would sell well. Helping my team run social media accounts was an important part of our success, and involved brainstorming imaginative ideas to build up an online following. This resulted in us winning the ‘Best Social Media’ award in the South-East District.

Languages
• High standard of spoken French due to dual nationality and proficient French writing skills due to AS level studies.

Awards
• Higher Project Qualification - awarded an A* for dissertation and presentation on the subject ‘Can a child be born evil’. The experience required excellent time management and has improved my public speaking.
• Awarded the ‘Molecular Genetics’ prize by the University of Bristol School of Biochemistry for receiving the highest marks in the relevant modules.
• Achieving exam results in the top 10% of the year group throughout the first two years of my degree.
