How Much Does it Cost to Get Educational Guidance?

By Joseph, published on 26/08/2019 Blog > Professional Development > Personal Development > Do You Have to Pay for Educational Guidance?

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” – Antoine de Saint Exupéry

1 in 10 students drops out of university in the first year. It could be interesting to consider why this is.

An academic appraisal looks at exam results but also allows students to better understand what they’re good at, what they like, and what they can do in their lives.

There are plenty of online career development tools as well as career fairs, job fairs, and ways to find out more about the world of work. Unfortunately, with career choices being so important, it can be tricky to get free career advice. With this in mind, let’s have a look at the cost of getting academic appraisals.

Finding a Free Educational Guidance Appraisal

Academic appraisals are useful for those in secondary school, sixth form, or college who need help choosing what to do during school and their professional career planning.

Even though there are academic appraisals you can pay for, you can always start with some free online personality tests for help with career exploration. Additionally, they can get you thinking about particular career paths and the qualifications you’ll need for jobs in the field.

You’ll be surprised just how many career opportunities there are once you start looking for jobs and internships and thinking about a future career!

What Are Online Tests For?

The first thing you’ll probably do when looking for an academic appraisal is search online. You’ll find plenty of results for career guidance tests, aptitude tests, etc. on the internet.

These tests can help you work out what your child is good at or what fields they’d be best suited to according to their skills, motivation, and passions. There are tests for different ages, likes and dislikes, qualifications, etc. and they’ll help them with establishing some career goals.

These tests might give you ideas for careers you’ve never considered.

On the other hand, you need to take these with a pinch of salt. If someone knows exactly what they want to do, it doesn’t matter if the test says otherwise. A career counsellor will probably give you better answers than an online quiz or test.

Career Appraisals from Careers Services

Some careers services can other advice and appraisals to young people looking to start working towards a particular career or work out what they want to do. They also have plenty of information on what qualifications and experience you’ll need for certain jobs and careers. This is one of the first steps towards getting the career you want.

While some career services tend to focus on those in school or university, there are also services for those looking to change careers in later life. An appraisal could help them work out what they need to do to get ahead in the job market.

They’re generally for teens and young adults so you might want to make an appointment with them after graduation!

There are several steps to a career or academic appraisal:

  • Analysis: school career, personality, motivation, skills, areas of study, strengths and weaknesses, etc.
  • Exploration: looking at what’s been learnt during the analysis, possible qualifications and training options, fields of work, and careers. The goal is to provide the student with options.
  • Planning: at the end of the appraisal, a counsellor can work with the student to help create an action plan.

Free counselling is often available from certain careers services. Don’t hesitate to give this a go. Students at school can also get in touch with the career counsellor there which will be free. However, you need to keep in mind that you won’t be able to spend several hours going through an appraisal with them but rather shorter appointments (30 minutes, for example). Additionally, you may require several sessions to do an appraisal and get through the analysis, exploration, and planning phases. Once you’ve finished your assessment, you’ll know which job postings to start looking at, put together a career plan, and work on interview skills, etc.

If you’re helping your child or teenager with their career, don’t make these mistakes.

How Much Do Career Assessments Cost with Companies?

There are free appraisals available, but some students or professionals may need a bespoke private careers service.

There are many companies and organisations offering appraisals and guidance.

In some cases, you’ll need to attend several appointments, spending several hours with a counsellor or consultant. The cost of these can vary wildly depending on who you go to. They can provide comprehensive career management and vocational assistance.

If you’re not sure what career you want to have, they can help you with job search strategies and finding job opportunities, writing cover letters and CVs, and career information in general.

The Cost of Career Coaching with Superprof

On Superprof, there are career coaches ready to help you work out what do with your life. From techniques and skills classes to comprehensive career coaching, you’ll find thousands of career coaches on the platform.

Career coaching tutors are the next step once you’ve done your appraisal. A coach can help students complete the plan they outlined at the end of their appraisal. Generally, career coaches are specialised in a particular academic field but there’s also general career coaching to help you with learning techniques and motivation.

The tutors choose their rates and these are usually representative of their experience, qualifications, and the service they offer. The more experience they have, the more you’ll have to pay to be one of their students. That said, many tutors offer the first session for free so you can see if they’re right for you.

Of course, there are other factors such as how far they need to travel, whether the lessons take place at the tutor’s or student’s house, and the level of the student. You can expect to pay between £25 and £50 per hour but there are expert coaches offering tutorials for as much as £100. The important thing is to get the results you’re after.

Tutors can help you explore certain career pathways, plan a career change, do a career assessment, and act as your career advisor.

So which option will you choose for your child? A free personality test, guidance from school, or a private career coach?

It doesn’t matter how far along you are on your chosen career path, a career counsellor or career advisor can always help you explore other career options, be them starting a new career, looking at other employment opportunities, or even going to graduate school. Once you’ve done a self-assessment, you can start thinking about getting more help.

On Superprof, you can find life coaches, career tutors, and academic support tutors. There are three main types of tutorial available: face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials. Each type of tutorial comes with its pros and cons and you’ll need to think about your budget and your goals when choosing which one to go for.

Face-to-face tutorials are between you and your tutor. As the only student in the class, you’ll benefit from tailored sessions and your tutor’s undivided attention. While these are often the most costly type of private tutorial, they’re also the most cost-effective thanks to how much time your tutor can spend focusing on you.

Online tutorials are similar to face-to-face tutorials in terms of the tutor-student ratio but your tutor won’t be in the room with you. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can now get private tutoring via webcam using video conferencing software such as Skype. While not ideal for hands-on subjects, online tutorials are great for academic subjects and they’re often cheaper than the face-to-face tutorials since the tutor doesn’t need to factor travel costs into their rates.

Finally, group tutorials, as you may have guessed, are when you’re taught alongside other students in a group. With several students footing the bill, these tutorials often work out cheaper per student per hour. While cheaper, it does mean you won’t get as much attention from your tutor as they’ll need to focus on several students at once. Unfortunately, this all means that they can’t tailor their sessions to you as they’ll need to take the other students’ needs, strengths and weaknesses, and goals into account when planning their lessons.

Think carefully about your goals, budget, and learning style before deciding what type of tutorials are right for you or your child! Don’t forget to benefit from the free first hour with several different tutors to see who you’d like to work with.
