“Computers are like Old Testament gods; lots of rules and no mercy.” - Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth
Coding is becoming increasingly important and is playing a bigger role in education in the UK. The average programmer earns £30k/year and their wage can increase by nearly 40% throughout their careers.
Worth a try, isn’t it?
If you’re interested in learning how to program or how to code with a private tutor, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s look at the sites where you can learn how to program with a face-to-face private tutor or an online tutor over webcam.
Learning to Program with Superprof
Let’s start with ourselves.
There are 12 million visitors a month to our site and 10 million experienced and qualified tutors teaching subjects like maths, physics, chemistry, academic coaching, study skills, cooking, dance, and even robotics.
How Can You Find a Programming Tutor on Superprof?
To find the right tutor, search for the type of programming you want to learn or “computer programming” and where you live. You can then look at the profiles of all the nearby tutors offering face-to-face tutorials.
Many of our tutors offer the first lesson for free. This is a great way to see how they teach and whether you get along well with them. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask them questions about their approach, experience, and qualifications.
Before you choose your tutor, you might want to view their profile and see what their other students had to say about them. This will give you a better idea of their skills and how their students enjoyed their lessons.
How Much Does It Cost to Use Superprof?
After you’ve made your choice, you’ll need to pay £29 for a 30-day Student Pass to contact the tutors you’re interested in. You can contact as many tutors as you want during this time and cancel the monthly subscription at any time. After that, it’s between you and your tutor.
Once the tutor’s got back to you, you can meet up in person or over webcam (if they offer online tutorials). The payment for the lessons is arranged between the tutor and the student. Superprof doesn’t take any commission and the tutors are free to set their rates for their lessons.

Payments occur via the platform 24 hours before the lesson takes place.
This is another platform that allows you to search for in-person and online private tutoring.
You can search by subject, level, and location. For finders’ fee tutors, you’ll pay £19.99 + VAT to Tutor Hunt and then pay the tutor.
Newer tutors on the platform pay 20%-25% of their rates back to Tutorhunt and in these cases, you won’t pay the finders’ fee.

Tutors need to apply to the platform and need to be approved before they can start working. Tutorfair takes between 20% and 25% of the tutors’ earnings, which means most will increase their rates to account for this.
Keep this in mind when looking at the tutors’ rates. However, Tutorful does provide payment services and an online classroom.
Fleet Tutors offers a more exclusive service than some of the other companies on this list. This is more so a company you'll work for as a tutor rather than a platform for tutors to find a tutee and vice versa.
This is a platform that focuses on the quality rather than the quantity of tutors.
The company has been around for several decades now and is at the higher end of the scale in terms of service and price.

This platform works more like an agency for tutors. If tutors apply (and get your Enhanced DBS Check), this platform will get them leads and charge commission on each of your lessons at the end of the month.
Students will enjoy the fact that the tutors have been vetted and checked, something that's hugely important when tutors are working with children or vulnerable students.
However, there isn't a way for students to search for tutors or browse profiles.
So which platform will you choose to look for programming tutorials?
If you've decided to look for programming tutors on Superprof, you'll find plenty of experienced and qualified ones. You can search for computer programming in general or specific programming languages if you know exactly what you're interested in learning. We recommend being specific in your search as you'll be more likely to find a professional who can help you to learn effectively. There are three main types of tutorial available for every subject and each comes with its pros and cons.
Group tutorials are often the cheapest option and they're great for those on a tight budget. However, in addition to sharing the cost of the lesson with the other students, you'll also need to share the tutor's time and attention. This means that you won't have as much control over what you learn and how the lesson is taught.
Face-to-face tutorials, on the other hand, are just between you and your tutor. The tutor can plan each lesson with you in mind and consider how you like to learn and the topics you need to study to meet your learning objectives. As a result, they tend to charge more than other tutors as you'll be paying for both the time they spend teaching you and the extra time they spend outside of the lessons adapting the course to you. Of course, with every minute dedicated to your learning, one-on-one tutorials still tend to be the most cost-effective type of lesson out there.
Finally, there are online tutorials. If you can't find a suitable tutor near you or can't have a tutor come to you for any reason, you can learn almost anything remotely from tutors all over the world. All you need is a decent internet connection and a webcam. As the tutor doesn't have to travel and can schedule more lessons each week as a result, they tend to charge less per hour than face-to-face tutors.
Don't forget that a lot of the tutors on Superprof offer the first hour of tutoring for free. Use these free sessions to try a few different tutors and see which one is right for you before you commit. It's a good idea to set out a list of criteria before you start your search and ensure that you get along with your tutor.
