Among the many things that Manchester is known for, science and engineering rank at the top of the list. After all, this city was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution - or, to be exact, it was built around that revolution.

In keeping with Manchester's tendency to be on the cutting edge of technological innovation, the University of Manchester is where the Manchester Baby was born (in 1948). It was the world's first programmed computer.

Why, then, would it come as any surprise that Mancunians are all over the cryptocurrency craze?

Besides in London - where you could practically throw a rock and hit a cryptocurrency class venue, Manchester may lead the country in offerings to learn about cryptocurrency, blockchain and all of the activity related to these currencies.

Let's find out about some of the best cryptocurrency classes, workshops, seminars and events in the Greater Manchester area.

Learn About Cryptocurrency with CryptoBatesGroup

You know you're onto a good thing when you have access to a teacher who got in on the ground floor of new technology. Such is the case with Crypto Bates Group.

Right around the time that smartphones exploded onto the market, in 2012, this group turned its attention to the possibilities crypto could offer. Through collaboration and by contracting on an assortment of cyber-projects, they amassed a substantial cache of resources and knowledge; some of which were only indirectly related to cryptocurrencies.

By 2015, this group became a fully fleshed-out enterprise that now dedicates its time and energy to advising governments, financial institutions and businesses on the growing role that cryptocurrencies play around the world.

They also devote a lot of time to teaching the general public about cryptocurrency. Their CoinFest events are conferences - more in the vein of Comic-Con than, say, a tech or medical conference.

These events take place over several days and include workshops, activities, exhibitions and speakers. Rather than participants looking over the schedule to decide which parts of the event they will attend or participate in, CoinFest has organised their affairs according to attendees' interests.

  • the blue track is for those who are absolutely new to crypto
  • the green track is for exhibitions: everything from crypto tools and trading platforms to crypto-driven projects
  • the purple track identifies who will speak this year and what their schedules are
  • the orange track lists all of the workshops that will take place during the event
  • the De-Fi track will help you understand decentralised finance
  • the Trading Corner will educate you on all things related to trading cryptocurrencies
  • There is also an artwork track that showcases crypto art from artists around the world.

Whether you're looking for that last nudge to convince you investing in Bitcoin or Altcoins is a good move or your focus is more on the tech side of things - wanting to find out what's new in the world of crypto, CoinFest is the place to be.

There is no cost for entry but registering your attendance will help the planners; you can notify them through Eventbrite. Just beware that this event is scheduled for November; that's quite a long time to wait, especially if you're on fire with the need to know all about cryptocurrencies' possibilities and the technology behind it.

Final note: Mancunians might be especially proud to know that the group hosting this event, CryptoBatesGroup, is homegrown. Even better: unlike so many start-ups, they did not relocate to The Big Smoke to advance their business or improve their profile; they proudly remain in Manchester.

Try as we might, we could find no such outfit that educates the public on cryptocurrencies in Glasgow.

Learn Cryptocurrency With Bitcoin Manchester

It all came about through a chance meeting. The cofounders of this group had met in London, at a Bitcoin conference, in 2012. By sheer coincidence, they met again several months later, this time in Manchester. They had both been frustrated at the lack of venues and opportunities for dedicated crypto enthusiasts so they founded one themselves.

Today, they work with local merchants in the Greater Manchester area, helping them to understand the benefits of cryptocurrencies and adapting their businesses to accept payment from virtual wallets.

They've also made it their mission to educate the public about Bitcoin and all of the technology involved.

They don't hold classes, workshops or seminars; theirs is a more social endeavour. They arrange meetings - sometimes in a pub or restaurant and sometimes in a conference hall. For instance, their last meeting was at the Manchester Technology Centre. Clearly, this group is not your average MeetUp.

All of their meetings are topic-specific, with the meeting's agenda published in advance. From some of their past events, it's easy to tell that you have to have more than a rudimentary knowledge of bitcoin, blockchain and Lighting. However, they're not all about new technologies and how to use them; their last event included a fascinating discussion about the history of money and how money works.

As they are fond of pointing out - and as cryptocurrency classes across the UK reveal, currencies outside of any centralized control, meaning those currencies not issued by a government work differently than fiat currencies.

You can catch up with Bitcoin Manchester on their MeetUp page or through their website, where you can also register for their next event.

Cryptocurrency Lessons Online

As cryptocurrencies are web-based, it makes sense that the bulk of courses on cryptocurrencies, blockchain, mining and service are remote - as opposed to being taught at university or in a classroom.

In the UK, so far, only Oxford University offers a Blockchain Strategy Program aimed at businesses. Its syllabus indicates that course participants must have a fundamental knowledge of cryptocurrency systems, how they function and how they can be incorporated into already-existing businesses.

Contrast that offering to the handful of renowned universities in the US, such as Duke, Cornell, MIT and the University of California Berkeley campus that all have programmes addressing cryptocurrency and blockchain; some of them are even student-led!

Where does that leave the aspiring UK cryptocurrency trader, investor or garden-variety enthusiast?

If they live in Manchester, they are already better off than those who live in Birmingham, with its dearth of cryptocurrency courses and events. Still, the pickings are rather slim and those events that are scheduled will take place late in the year. That's why it's best to turn your focus online.

Ideally, you want a course that not only informs and educates you but one that offers support as well, especially if you are new to the concepts of cryptocurrency and its systems. You don't need a video series to talk down to you and leave out important information.

One sure way to determine whether a course is effective is by its student feedback, either through comments or star ratings. That makes The Crypto Course the top online course for understanding all things crypto.

It's a zoom course that spans six hours, unveiling the theoretical aspects of cryptocurrency and how it works on a global scale. You can also learn how to mine Bitcoins. This highly-rated course explains why cryptocurrencies are the wave of the future and detail why getting in now will advantage you in the years to come.

You can also find your cryptocurrency Superprof through a ratings and testimonial system. Manchester has four Superprofs specialising in cryptocurrency tutoring, two of which have 5-star ratings and one who is so close to five stars that he may as well be considered top-notch.

While you may pay steep course fees for commercial training programmes that may or may not offer support after the lessons are over, Superprofs keep their rates low and generally offer their first hour of instruction for free. Furthermore, with a Superprof tutor, you will get the support you need and the education you request, not a lot of other information you're either not ready for or not interested in.

If you were on the search for accredited courses online, you are spoilt for choice. Several remote learning ventures offer a host of courses related to cryptocurrencies, such as Skill Up's Cryptocurrency Trading and ICO Investment diploma course.

ICO stands for Initial Coin Offering; both the acronym and the principle are modeled on the more familiar IPO - Initial Public Offering, something a new business introducing their company to the stock market publishes. Just as IPOs make shares available to investors, ICOs make coins available when a new cryptocurrency premieres.

If Skill Up's diploma course mentioned above covers more ground than you are ready to tackle, you might try out CourseCloud's accredited cryptocurrency course. It too is a video course but it comes with tutor support. However, while it offers a certificate of completion, it does not provide you with any type of formal credentials.

We really like this course because it doesn't just address the concepts and constructs of cryptocurrency. It also goes into philosophical discussions about the future of money and how cryptocurrency is changing the world of finance. It also expounds on the intrinsic value of such currencies.

All of these courses and others can be found on Reed's cryptocurrency course page. Naturally, if you prefer a Superprof to all of those video courses, you can find your tutor on our page.
