Methodology

Any person wanting tutoring has something to build on already. My job as a tutor is to help you gain and keep confidence to build on what you already know and understand. Sometimes it's the fear of failure that gets in the way - I like to make learning fun *and* productive so I help you learn constructively, from whatever mistakes you're lucky enough to make.

My specialism is encouraging adults to "learn to like learning" rather than to pass specific examinations. What's great about learning to learn is that you can pick anything up you need in life and use it wherever you want. However, I can also help you achieve or improve Functional Skills or GCSE Maths qualifications.

I teach the use of Maths in daily life - for work, for budgets, for contracts, for comparisons. I can also help with vocational tasks, such as creating a CV, applying for jobs, creating a portfolio.

Since we don't yet know each other, I am happy to discuss over the phone or by email - for free - what your needs are and how I can help. If you also want to meet with me, I will charge for an hour's consultation at £20. My normal rates for my time are £50 per hour for adults.

Most of the time I work from my home address in North London, after work hours on weekdays in term time. If you would like me to travel to you, I will charge an agreed travel fee reflecting the time and travel costs involved. If you want me to work weekends I will charge time-and-a-half my normal rates. I will consider working during school holiday - we would need to agree such dates well in advance.

Certain subjects that I teach require site-specific equipment and facilities - I can give you a list of requirements when we discuss the subjects you're interested in. Any software, work books or consumable materials would be charged extra at a pre-agreed rate (or you can obtain these yourself from a list I will provide).

Some (more practical) subjects are not suitable for online tutoring. For those that are, I can offer a combination of: email Q&A; online questionnaires; google document exchange & marking; instruction in the use of 3rd party online learning web sites; selection of suitable 3rd party online tutorial videos; home computer shadowing (requires parental consent).

Please note, I charge the full fee for cancellation of pre-arranged tutoring sessions less than a working day before the agreed date, unless we can re-schedule. This applies to online sessions as well.
