My belief is that lessons (and individual study!) must be divided between practical application of skills and also a thorough understanding of the theory behind it. You could be a great singer, but if you can't read music and don't know why a composer has set the words a certain way, you will find it much harder to learn new pieces and perhaps won't perform with the same conviction as if you had researched the background. Likewise, you could have spent hours studying scores and books about music but then be unable to put this into practice when trying to write a composition or perform a piece. I think the best learning style always links the two together and keeps it engaging for the student!
I am a freelance singer in London specializing in classical music. I've taught music privately for 7 years and also have classroom experience. My degree was mainly academic and theory-based so I would be able to help prepare students for GCSE and A-level music, but I am also very familiar with the ABRSM Grade exams in both voice, piano and theory.
