I agree a broad programme with parents then adjust as specific tests come up at school in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. I adjust my content to match which of the four GCSE options are taken namely Triple or Double Science, Higher or Foundation. to and I set very targeted homework, followed by an email feedback after every lesson. I use a mixture of interactive on-screen slides and quizzes I have created myself, plus short internet videos and tests, and real past paper questions with worked answers. I mix conventional theory with syllabus-related examples from sport, music and the news. I use official mark schemes to explain to pupils what the examiners are looking for. Although I cannot predict exactly the questions, I can predict what type will crop up for instance Environment and Climate Change is ubiquitous across all sciences; and since practicals are not examined written questions about core practicals are certain and I emphasise these with videos and real experiments; and there will always be off the wall out of the box questions which at first don't appear related to the syllabus but actually are.
I am a Cambridge graduate in Natural Sciences including Physics, Chemistry, Biology of Cells and Biochemistry. In my tutoring career I have over 1000 hours 1-1 experience with pupils ranging from those aspiring for excellence such as A grade GCSE ,to struggling pupils aiming for C, to those with specific problems such as dyslexia. I take special care to "teach to the test" with very detailed up to date syllabus knowledge, and coaching is given in exam techniques and help for e.g. Mock exams. In my business career I spent many years in the Oil, Gas and Chemicals industry training individuals or groups in business numeracy topics such as finance, statistics, data handling and presentation, graphs and IT. I have combined some of these skills with carefully researched academic GCSE syllabus knowledge to create around 200 specific lesson plan presentations across Maths, Business and Science topics in the AQA and Edexcel programmes, each covering detailed definitions, methods, tips, exam style worked examples and closing plenary. I run through these on screen and issue handouts. The specific homework I set covers both written past paper examples and web sites such as BBC Bitesize. I tutor at my home and also by Skype to e.g Brussels and China. I am also a school governor, provide Oxbridge entrant interview and NSAA and PAT exam practice, write an educational blog on my website which I run with my wife Alison and tutor my children (when they let me!). I am also a qualified examiner have marked hundreds of GCSE scripts. Finally, I get to know a pupil's hobbies such as sport and music and try to build worked examples around those to keep things fun!
