Carol - North Curry - Support for Students with Autism

Methodology

I am married with four grown up sons and live in Taunton, Somerset. As well as teaching, I host foreign students.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach English, Reading and Spelling, Maths and English as a Foreign Language.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a Certificate of Education in Education and a Certificate in Basic Skills, Literacy. I also have a secretarial diploma with German.

- How much do you charge?

The cost would be £20.00 for one hour, but three-quarters of an hour and also half hour lessons are available depending on the pupil's needs. I would charge a small amount extra for travel, depending on how far I had to go (probably about £4.00). If two pupils were taught the same subject together I would increase the amount by one half. A free initial consultation meeting is available to parents and pupils if that is suitable.

- Where do you teach?

I teach at home or at the students' homes. The furthest I would go would be about 5 miles. I would travel to the Taunton area. At home, I teach in a quiet room and parents are welcome to stay (normally in a room close by).

- When are you available?

I am available during the day and early evening until about 7pm and on Saturday mornings. During the holidays, the lessons can be at other times, depending of course on any holidays booked. If it is important to have a lesson at a different time, please enquire whether I would be available.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach pupils from 4 to 12 years that is Key Stages 1 and 2 and lower secondary (Key Stage 3 but not GCSE). I also teach English as a Foreign Language to children or adults.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I use a variety of materials for the different subjects to make them as interesting as possible. I am very patient, teach sympathetically and am very flexible.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have extensive experience in primary schools at KS1 and 2 in full-time and part-time posts and also of special needs in secondary schools. I have taught on Home Tuition with students who were unable to attend school and in a Special School for children in care, some of whom had behavioural difficulties or were autistic or dyslexic. Lately, my experience has been on supply in primary schools throughout the age groups and teaching privately. I have also taught English as a Foreign Language to children and adults in my home.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I do have an up-to-date CRB.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at Gipsy Hill College, London. I also have a Certificate in Basic Skills, Literacy. I attended the SpLd course at Bridgwater College.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to ATL and GTC.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I am teaching Maths, English for Common Entrance and Reading to pupils who vary in age from 5 to 11 years old. I am also teaching English as a Foreign Language to an adult.
