About the lesson

我的课堂有趣好玩,我会使用多种教学工具和材料,适应不同年龄段、有着不同学习目标的学生。学语言,是为了更好地沟通。所以我的课上会有足够的时间给你做对话练习,而不是只听,不说。在我的课上,你除了能够学到词汇、句子,还能了解到中国的文化和风土人情。另外,我还是一个美食爱好者。如果你也喜欢中国美食,我非常乐意和你分享我的心得!期待和你的见面。

Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Chinese language fluently because I was born in China and am a native Chinese speaker.

  • 02

Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Confucius, known as Kong Zi in the Chinese language, has been a household name in China throughout history and his teaching philosophy has exerted an everlasting impact upon Chinese tradition, culture and belief. Until today, his legacy still prevails and the Confucius Institute, named after him, has been established all over the world, aiming to teach non-Chinese speakers to learn and understand the Chinese language and culture.

  • 03

Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favorite Chinese sayings is ' 熟能生巧' (shú néng shēng qiǎo), which can be literally translated as 'precise makes perfect.'

  • 04

Why does teaching this language matter to you?

It becomes increasingly important for people to be able to converse in Chinese as China is playing more and more of a significant role in global politics and economics. In my opinion, mastering Chinese will soon become an essential life skill like using a computer and driving a car because the whole world is attempting to get involved with China in all business sectors. Being able to speak fluent Chinese with a standard accent would give people a strong edge over their schoolmates or colleagues, in their schooling, work or future career success.

  • 05

What is the main difficulty in learning Chinese and what can help the process of learning?

For many western students, different tones are the most difficult part. Therefore, mastering Chinese with an accurate accent would not be easy. To overcome the issue, I make sure from the very start that I constantly accentuate and stress word pronunciation of 5 varied tones, with meticulous effort to help students precisely capture each tone by hearing and spot the differences between each one. I provide the students with the customized audio resources so they can unmistakably imitate and practice outside of the classroom

  • 06

Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

In early 2017, I started working as a part-time Chinese teacher in an education company. Soon, I found that my knowledge reserves were not enough, so I went to the UK to study education. In the past four years, I have been engaged in education-related work, and my understanding of language teaching has been improving.

  • 07

How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge in language learning and teaching?

I have been to a lot of places which are more than half of China, that was interesting. I found China has 56 ethnic groups, speaking as many as 80 different languages and dialects. Mandarin is an official and standard language, communication between different ethnic groups or regions couldn't be materialised if without mandarin. . I found that travelling to be a great help in improving my language skill as it means I can understand more about the language by seeing different people. It makes me curious to be a language expert.

  • 08

What makes you a Superprof in language?

I like my job and the language I teach. This enthusiasm prompted me to go further in teaching. I enriched my curriculum with stories, poems, and pop songs to help my students understand the charm of Chinese.
