- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach maths, music, science, violin, viola, and music theory. However I also am more than willing to be a neutral listening ear for any musician needing feedback on any piece or performance. I can help with composition to an extent too.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
A level Music (C), Chemistry (B) and Mathematics (Pending - retaking a B grade).
ABRSM Grade V Theory, Grade V clarinet (2004) and Grade IV violin (2003) - I have since worked at improving my playing but haven't taken any grades since then; mainly due to a string of temporary teachers, unfortunately. I am told that I am now grade VII standard on clarinet, and between Grades VII and VIII on violin / viola.
- How much do you charge?
My price depends on how far I have to travel really; the prices given are for within a 10-mile radius approximately. For my musical tutoring I charge based on whether the student is a beginner or intermediate (The prices above are for intermediate). One-off lessons to go through things such as fingerings or bowings for a piece will depend on the standard of piece.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at students' homes. I live close to Harlington train station so can easily get to Bedford or Luton (and anywhere in between) but probably no further unless the student lives quite close to the station (for example Harpenden or St. Albans). I can also go to Leighton Buzzard/Linslade; Ampthill too and anywhere in between! Milton Keynes in general is a bit far, but the Woburn Sands side of it I will consider.
- When are you available?
Unfortunately my evenings are already fairly full, and I'm not available on Sundays at all. With enough notice I can probably rearrange other days or evenings somehow, but I'm certainly not available after 6:00 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
KS1 through to GCSE, academically. Violin/viola: up to grade 6 (but will tutor individual pieces up to grade 8 if required). I can also help flautists, saxophonists and oboists up to approximately grade 4 if they need help with a particular piece. If any musician needs a neutral listener to give them feedback with things, I am more than willing to do that also.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
If you're not sure if I can offer the service you require, please do ask! The same goes for if you're not sure whether I can come to you or not. More generally though, never, ever be afraid to ask for help. Anybody who thinks badly of another for asking for help is probably too afraid to ask for help themselves.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I currently tutor KS3 maths, and have tutored friends informally musically. I have recently been involved on a project doing music workshops with KS1 children, which has taught me a lot about that age group. I work with KS2 and KS3 students at music days organised by Bedfordshire Music Service, and am involved in projects wherever possible.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Not yet because I haven't been employed by an organisation. I am looking into getting one though.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I haven't any formal training as such, but I work on projects and days organised by Bedfordshire Music Service and the Philharmonia Orchestra. On my last project (a joint venture between the two above organisations) I have worked with musicians such as, amongst others, Richard Russell, Adam MacKenzie, Sarah O'Flynn and Marjory King, and the composer and animateur John Webb.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
One of them started with me in November with absolutely no confidence in his mathematical abilities whatsoever, and had moved down to the fourth set of five in his half of the year. He consistently achieved level 7 in his practice SAT papers, and informs me he is well ahead of his classmates and finds what they're doing 'really easy'. His confidence has simply soared, which is half of the battle won.
