Chemistry student offering chemistry and maths tuition for national 5 and higher level

Methodology

I focus on finding out where the student has particular difficulty, and will explain these concepts in new ways, where possible. I will always make sure to check with them that their understanding has been furthered before moving on. I will also confirm their ability in areas which they believe to be confident in.

Experience

I am Fraser, a 3rd year chemistry undergraduate at the University of Glasgow. I have also previously studied maths, statistics and astronomy at university level. At school, I completed the Saltire Award, a volunteer programme where I assisted in teaching national 5 classes of chemistry and PE.

Experience

Kiosk Assistant at Ibrox Stadium, Elior UK 12/08/2016—13/07/18
During the football season I worked in a kiosk where there are constantly new jobs to be
done: preparing hot food to a high quality, ensuring all work surfaces are clean and tidy
to keep to hygiene standards and maximise efficiency within the team, checking the
quantity of stock and going to the store to replenish supplies when needed, or serving
any customers with a friendly face and helping them with any queries. All this needed to
be done with speed and plenty of communication with everyone else in the kiosk, many
of whom I had never met, since the people in each kiosk change every week. This has
made me an effective member of any crew, constantly striving to maximise productivity
where needed with the greatest benefit to the customer. Often I was the most
experienced, therefore had to be able to help new recruits and delegate duties between
the team, which I did with confidence and patience. I love to be part of a wellcoordinated
team that excels at the job they do because of their ability to communicate
and work together in harmony. I put the satisfaction of the customers above all else, and
took pride in knowing I have given them the best possible service.

Lifeguard, Making Waves 28/02/2017—23/06/18
I worked on the poolside where children (usually 15-25 per half-hour class) received
swimming lessons. This required continuous vigilance in a loud, unpredictable
environment. If a child was in danger or any other hazard presented itself I needed to
react first to solve the situation, in the most appropriate manner. I frequently also had
be on hand to answer any questions. This commonly requires cooperation with the
parents and other staff.

Food & Beverage Assistant, Leonardo Inn Glasgow West End 12/07/18—02/20
I work behind the bar as well as waiting tables in the hotel, serving breakfast, lunch and
dinner. As a frequent point of contact between residents and the company, I must ensure
that I always greet people with a pleasant attitude and act professionally. I also require
the ability to remain composed in a stressful setting, so that I can quickly and address
everyone’s needs appropriately. Though the bulk of my work consists of working in the
bar and restaurant, my duties are not restricted to these areas — any complaint or query
that a guest has, I shall try to find a solution for. In a role like this, coordination within
and between every department (kitchen, food and beverage, reception) is paramount so
the quickly achieved camaraderie among the team helps to keep all operations running
smoothly.

Volunteering
During my 5th year at school I committed myself to the Saltire Award, in which I assisted
National 5 chemistry classes. Teaching the pupils developed responsibility, as well as my
own understanding, and I learned the importance of effective social skills. I attained the
Ascent award, requiring 100 hours.
Whilst the Commonwealth Games were being held in 2014 I trained as a volunteer and
spent the week guiding tourists. This was a great opportunity to work with different
people of all ages and backgrounds.

Other Qualifications
For 13 years I was a faithful member of the 5th Boys Brigade. The final 2 years of which
were spent working on my Queen's Badge - a highly demanding award that involves
developing a physical interest, a skill and voluntary work both inside and outside of the
organisation. I volunteered at my local youth club, where I took initiative by organising
football games for the children and teaching them some badminton. I also worked at the
Anchor Boys and Junior Section within my company. This involved being put in an
unfamiliar situation and having to adjust to fill the role. With this flexibility I am
confident that I can work well in new circumstances. It has taught me a great deal of
responsibility and improved my skills of decision making, planning and improvisation. To
complete the award I took part in a weekend course, designed to take me out of my
comfort zone and test my abilities of communication and teamwork.
Whilst in my final year of school, I undertook a sports leadership course. I decided to
take this class to develop new and existing qualities such as confidence and the ability
to take the lead.
My school gave me the role of Sports Captain. This position involved planning events,
supervising lunchtime activities and rewarding excellence in sport, while helping to
improve the health and wellbeing of young people. Being proactive and organised was
crucial in this position.
