Hi, my name is Andrew, I am a graduate of both Oxford and Cambridge universities and an experienced tutor. I focus on explaining Chemistry in a structured way that helps students build confidence and improve their understanding of the subject.
Chemistry and Physics at GCSE
Preparation for the BMAT exam
I have a PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from the University of Cambridge and a Master's degree from Oxford University in Chemistry (2:1).
How I tutor
I deliver structured tutorials that are based on topics or concepts that are proving tricky for the student to master. I assess the student, by either review of recent exam papers or through verbal discussion before the first tutorial begins. I then draw-up a lesson plan and choose appropriate material for the student to attempt during the tutorial. I find that this approach allows us to cover all the main teaching points and allows me to adjust the difficulty of the tutorial to fit the level of the student.
In each tutorial, we work on a mixture of study skills, scientific concepts and exam-style questions. I usually introduce the concepts relevant to the topic we are studying before asking questions to ensure the student has a clear understanding of the science. I also distribute practice questions which we go through in the tutorial, to assess the student's understanding and to provide material for further discussion.
All materials are supplied free of charge.
I tutor from my home in central Banbury at the weekend. I travel to tutor students in North Oxfordshire and villages nearby where an additional travel fee applies based upon the distance to your house.
I have tutored higher-tier GCSE and A-level for the last two years. I used to teach undergraduates at Cambridge University and have trained others in a one-to-one capacity in industry and as a post-doctoral researcher.
I take students of all levels of ability, from those who failed to achieve a classified grade in their mock exams through to those aiming for the grades needed to gain entry to study medicine.
In addition to tutoring, I also worked for Cambridge Assessments as an examiner for the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) for two seasons.
Physics/Chemistry GCSE: £30 per hour
Chemistry A-level: £35 per hour
I offer a free meeting to discuss requirements, answer any questions, pass on a few study tips and evaluate the student ahead of our first proper tutorial. The free tutorial covered in the offer refers to this initial meeting.
I am an experienced tutor and Chemistry graduate of both Oxford and Cambridge universities.
During tutorials, I focus on explaining the underlying concepts in Chemistry and Physics in a structured and logical fashion. I tailor the pace of the tutorial and homework questions to the ability of the student and work closely to the syllabus of your exam board.
Andrew is a passionate and very able tutor. Our son, currently sitting his GCSEs, benefited hugely with only two tutorials. I highly recommend him.
Andrew has been an excellent tutor for my daughter who`s confidence in Chemistry has improved no end. She is now achieving better test results at school and feels that she has a good understanding of her subject, ready for revision now.
