I have taught chemistry at all levels for nearly 40 years. I have been an examiner for over 30 years both for UK examination boards and Overseas. I have been at various times in my career Head of Chemistry, Head of Science, Head of Sixth Form and a member of SLT. I was an additional inspector for OFSTED for five years and took part in a number of inspections of the quality of the sixth form provision in school sixth forms and colleges. My performance management reviews grade me as an outstanding teacher and many of my students have gone on to study medicine or chemistry related subjects at University. My role as Head of Sixth means that I can advise students with regards to the UCAS system and choice of University/Courses.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Chemistry was a huge worry for me especially the organic. Mr Curless was very understanding and empathised very well.
He started with the basics offering me worksheets which I found very helpful and doing this gave me more confidence. On results day I was overjoyed having secured a very strong A in my organic exam . I honestly feel I could not have got this grade without Mr Curless and I would strongly recommend him for any other student struggling with chemistry.
Derek has been a really good chemistry tutor for me. He has really cared about my learning and understanding He always prepared good lessons for me and went out of his way to find extra resources. When I found the work very difficult Derek was patient and found different ways of explaining a concept until I fully understood.
