I enjoy communicating chemical concepts to young people. I have been teaching an A-level pupil since March who is now delighted to have a predicted grade B (having previously got an E grade in an assessment).
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach GCSE and A-Level Chemistry.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BSc (First Class) in Chemistry and a PhD in Organometallic Chemistry from the University of Bristol.
I am a Chartered Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 per hour. I prefer to teach either individuals or a couple of children if they have similar abilities.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home or at students' homes. I am happy to travel to Sunbury, Chertsey, Staines, Ashford, Shepperton and Hampton.
- When are you available?
I am available evenings and weekends and during school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach ages 11 to 18 (GCSE and A level).
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for GCSE and A level.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Chemistry is not always easy but it is a fascinating subject that covers biochemistry (the chemistry of life); industrial products such as plastics, soaps and pharmaceuticals; fuels such as methane and gasoline; and refining of metals. There may seem to be lots of rules but it is a logical subject that can be mastered with perseverance. It is possible to improve rapidly with one to one coaching as the students have an opportunity to ask all those difficult questions about things that are puzzling them in a supportive environment.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have worked for over 25 years for a major oil company, originally as a research chemist and then as a patent attorney specialising in chemistry. I have experience of exploration and production of oil, refining, petrochemicals, oil field chemicals and polymers. One of my skills in my industrial career was to communicate complex chemical concepts to non-specialists. I have also tutored at both University and secondary school level. I have a son in Year 8 and therefore understand issues that children can encounter when learning chemistry.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes - copy of certificate available on request.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at Bristol University.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys
European Patent Institute
- Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my current students in studying A level chemistry along with two non-science A levels. We have been working mainly on physical chemistry including any necessary maths. He was recently delighted to get a predicted grade B for his A-level.
I am also tutoring my son in year 8. He got his highest mark in his end of year exams in chemistry!
