I give lessons to children, students and adults at various levels (GCSE, A level, general knowledge). I believe that no right teaching method exists. My lessons are personalised based on each student's level and interests. I particularly enjoy teaching Latin and Ancient Greek as I think that studying Classics is not interesting per se but it can help in improving problem solving skills. Understanding and translating from languages such as Latin and Greek is like solving a puzzle where grammar rules fit together need to be untangled to reach meaning. During my lessons of Latin and Greek, I always make sure that students are confident with the grammar as this is the first tool to understand languages. My background in both Classics and Archaeology allows me to explore the ancient world from different points of view. In my classes I try to use different approaches to understand the ancient world, so that everyone can develop its own interest.
During my lessons of Italian, students practice all the skills, i.e. writing, speaking and listening. I believe that grammar is fundamental when learning a language but both grammar and vocabulary must be taught in context and not as a set of abstract rules.
I am a second year DPhil student in Classical Archaeology at the University of Oxford. I am originally from Torino, Italy, where I have been tutoring in Latin and Ancient Greek since my last years of high schools. I am also interested in didactics of languages and I have been trained as teacher of Italian as foreign language (CEDILS diploma). I am currently working as private tutor of Italian and Latin in Oxford.
