Classical Singer studying at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama providing singing and vocal performance lessons to students in South Wales.

Methodology

Jack is a 25 year old baritone from Clitheroe, Lancashire. He is in his fourth year on the BMus Vocal Performance course at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, studying under renowned tenor, Adrian Thompson and baritone, Donald Maxwell.

Jack is a Student Scholar of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, under artistic director, Adrian Partington. During his time at the BBC Jack has served as a chorus member and as a soloist in recordings and live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Wales.

In addition to this Jack has also had the pleasure of performing with many other notable companies including Sinfonia Cymru and Welsh National Opera where he recently made his operatic debut as Willi in Welsh National Youth Opera’s critically acclaimed production of Kommilitonen! by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, directed by Polly Graham and conducted by Alice Farnham.

Jack has been teaching singing in Cardiff and South Wales since September 2016, shortly after completing his teaching skills module at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of notable singing teachers, Kate Woolveridge and Lorna Anderson.

Though Jack primarily works as a classical singer, he is experienced in many different genres and styles of music. Whether it be classical, folk, musical theatre or more popular styles, Jack believes that a good basic technique is essential for paving the way to vocal success.

“I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED SINGING TO BE A JOURNEY. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR A SINGER STARTING OFF IS THAT YOU ENJOY YOUR OWN JOURNEY AND THE PROCESS OF LEARNING HOW TO FIRSTLY DISCOVER YOUR OWN VOICE AND SECONDLY, REALISE WHAT IT IS YOU HAVE TO SAY WITH IT. REGARDLESS OF AGE, GENDER, OR EXPERIENCE, I REALLY BELIEVE EVERYBODY HAS A UNIQUE VOICE AND SOMETHING EXCITING TO SHARE AND HOPEFULLY THROUGH OUR LESSONS, WE’LL DISCOVER WHAT THAT IS TOGETHER!”
— JACK

Although Jack is now a baritone, for many years he used to sing as a tenor. During this time, he was (and still is) privileged enough to receive lessons from eminent tenor, Adrian Thompson. While this technique is not now required in his own singing, it does equip Jack with a knowledge of the tenor mechanism, allowing him to teach tenor voices in addition to other male voice types with relative ease. This being said, Jack also has experience with female voices and has no reservations in teaching soprano, mezzo and alto voices.

Equally at home within an outreach setting, Jack has had the opportunity of working as a drama facilitator and ensemble practitioner at Burnley Youth Theatre, creating and delivering drama workshops to children from local primary schools. Jack recently had an opportunity to build on this experience in 2015 when he was involved in the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s school’s opera project, culminating in a series of singing workshops and a successful performance at Welsh National Opera.

Individually however, Jack prides himself on being able to tailor every lesson to suit the needs and requirements of each pupil. Singing is a very personal journey and can sometimes seem quite daunting for some, however through his warm demeanour and accessible teaching style - Jack feels he is able to quickly put singers at their ease.

Jack is a registered student member of the Musicians Union.

Experience

Recent performance highlights have included, performing Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle and performed by the CBSO Youth Chorus and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the 2015 BBC Proms season at the Royal Albert Hall. Also, being a chorus member in Verdi’s Falstaff directed by Martin Constantine and conducted by Carlo Rizzi. Additional highlights have included, singing in the chorus for Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 as well as Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, both conducted by Carlo Rizzi and performed at St David’s Hall, Cardiff.

Jack recently sang his first major operatic role as Willi in Welsh National Youth Opera’s critically acclaimed production of Kommilitonen! by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, directed by Polly Graham and conducted by Alice Farnham.

In September Jack was made a Student Scholar of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, under artistic director, Adrian Partington. During his time at the BBC Jack has served as a chorus member and as a soloist in recordings and live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Wales. In addition to this Jack has also performed larger choral works under the baton of several internationally renowned conductors such as Richard Balcome, Martyn Brabbins and Tadaaki Otaka. Jack continues to sing with the BBC National Chorus of Wales and is looking forward to performing as part of the 2017 BBC Proms season at the Royal Albert Hall.
