About the lesson
I am a very experienced teacher of piano in the classical tradition. My style is friendly and lively, with a sense of humour. I am passionate about music and my lessons are focussed on excellence and discovery of character.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Piano and theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
My qualifications stem from my extensive experience as a piano teacher (for some 20 years) as well as a working musician. I hold three degrees in music each of which have included requirements in piano pedagogy as part of the coursework.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £35 per lesson; I prefer these to last an hour. For very young children 45-minute lessons may be best (£30).
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my home near Crystal Palace Park in Sydenham. I regret I am unable to travel to students' homes.
- When are you available?
My teaching afternoons are Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Lessons typically happen between 4 and 7pm, but there may be some flexibility. My teaching calendar generally conforms to term-times.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
My youngest pupil was three years old, my oldest has been 65. I am probably at my best with children aged 6 to 16, but am prepared to take students outside this range. I am qualified to teach Suzuki piano (I was a Suzuki child myself also) and will teach a Westernised version of it alongside traditional note-reading if it suits a particular child (especially a young child).
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am happy to help students for grade exams or any school qualifications if they wish.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am enthusiastic about teaching, but my teaching time is limited. I am prepared to help curious beginners, amateurs who would like to become more accomplished as well as young people who feel they might pursue music as a career. Whatever your outlook, I would ask that you bring a sense of commitment and a love of music to our study together.
