Colin - Newark-on-Trent - Maths

Methodology

I am an experienced performer and teacher, always welcoming of new students. I aim to tailor lessons to your own aspirations, and to make study as fun and fulfilling as possible.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach singing, both classical and contemporary, and can also teach music theory and musicianship for those who want it. I also tutor in mathematics and physical sciences.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

All of my music training has been private, and so I do not have a music college degree. I trained with Howard Milner, teacher at the Royal Academy of Music, for 15 years, and undertook additional training through the Summer Music International Summer Schools at Ardingly College, through Floral Opera, Music for Youth and Sing Up. Subsequent training was with Jeffrey Talbot in London and Neil Howlett in Lincolnshire. I do have Grade 8 with distinction in both singing and violin.
I hold a PhD in Physical Chemistry from University of Birmingham.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30 per hour when teaching from home. These fees increase up to £32 per hour when travelling to other places where I pay rent on rooms. I currently charge £45 for groups sessions in schools, such as taking a school choir or singing group.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my home in Newark-on-Trent. I also teach in Grantham at Melody Music Rooms on Westgate.

- When are you available?

I teach both in and out of office hours all weekdays and Saturday mornings. Lessons in Grantham are all day Friday. During school holidays times are more flexible.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach from around age 7 up to any age. Currently my oldest student in 74, and feeling as young as ever! Many of my students are beginners, but I teach up to professional choir directors with music degrees.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall graded exams. I also prepare students for music college and drama college auditions, choir auditions or just singing to improve and enjoy themselves.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have performed principal roles in opera, operetta and music theatre across much of the Midlands, including Nottingham Theatre Royal, Nottingham Playhouse, Nottingham Arts Theatre, and Buxton Opera House. In addition I have been principal for West Riding Opera, Leeds and was invited to sing principal for four private opera concerts in Fidenza, Italy. I have also performed professionally as soloist with Opera Seria, Secret Opera / New London Opera Players, Newark Choral Society, Knaresborough Choral Society and the Stamford Christmas Festival. Other musical experiences involve session work as saxophonist, playing violin in a range of orchestras and chamber groups. I am the visiting singing teacher at Highfields School Newark, Grantham International Preparatory School, Belvoir High School and The West Bridgford School.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I currently hold a DBS disclosure certificate.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained mainly with Howard Milner - initially as a private student at Birmingham Conservatoire and then at his home in North London. I undertook additional training with various tutors at the Summer Music International Summer School, Ardingly College for 5 years, and also through Floral Opera. After some short study with Jeffrey Talbot, I then subsequently studied with Neil Howlett.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) and am listed on their register of professional private music teachers. I am also a member of the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS) and the British Voice Association (BVA).
