I like to have open discussion first with the student regarding the topic being taught. Then instruct the student to take down notes and highlight key words independently. If the student requires help I give it but only if the work is challenging enough for the. Lastly I test the student on various areas of the topic through making him/her answer multiple choice questions and exam style questions.
I've been a private tutor in my local area tutoring 6-16 year olds various subjects. I total I've tutored 7 students doing KS3 work and 4 doing Ks4 (GCSE's). As a result of my tutoring, my students have increased in their academic capabilities. E.g. A previous student of mine named Mia Tate had her E grades in science changed into B grades due to my help.
