Composition and Music Theory lessons with Guildhall School of Music and Drama student. ABRSM Grades 1-8.

Methodology

Hey, I'm James, I offer students a friendly and relaxed teaching experience tailored specifically to their musical goals, covering anything from more conventional classical compositional theory such as the ABRSM grade theory 1-8, counterpoint, harmony, orchestration and arranging, to more contemporary skills like song writing, Logic Pro X and Ableton, and writing for film and video games. Once we have had an initial FREE consultation lesson in which we will discuss your specific goals, I will create a unique course with exercises, both academic and practical, that we can work through together in our lessons. Ultimately, I believe the joy of music should stay at the centre of all musical education and in my lessons I will always aim to maintain your love of your music whilst providing you with the knowledge to progress your musicianship.

If there is less than 24 hours cancellation notice, students will be charged. As a musician time is precious, if we turn down a project due to teaching hours and a lesson is cancelled and the slot unpaid, it is very frustrating.

James 's CV

National Theatre Connections Winner 2017 - Composer

In 2017, I won the National Theatre ‘Connections’ award, directing and composing music for 'The Snow Dragons' with a cast of 16 actors. We performed both in the Lowry's Lyric Theatre and in the Dorfman Space at the National Theatre. My score consisted of folk inflected string quartet writing along with a set of original folk songs, with lyrics by Lizzie Nunnery, sung by the cast.

Illuminated River Foundation - Millennium Bridge Winner - Composer

Over the next ten years, the bridges on the Thames are being brought to life by an adaptive and immersive lighting display, illuminating the bridges each night. Funded by the Rothschilds family and the City of London corporation, I was asked to write a piece for the Millennium bridge. My piece, scored for Harpsichord, Orchestra and spoken word, was written to accompany the words of 4 Barbican young poets, with each poet writing personal responses to the bridges history. The piece is now tied to this project and is currently being played on water busses, geo-location apps and in various venues and spaces around London.

Beasts of London exhibition (Museum of London) - Composer/Conductor

In March 2019, the museum of London launched their new year long immersive exhibition about the animals of London throughout history, from pre-history to present day. Working along side names like Brian Blessed and Kate Moss, comedians such as Nish Kumar and Stephen Mangan, I was asked to write the music for a large section of the exhibition. The music was recorded with a small size orchestra and conducted by myself.

Orchestra In Motion (Londons first Indie Video Game Orchestra) - Lead Conductor

I am the conductor and founder of ‘Orchestra In Motion’, an ensemble committed to changing the way video game music is represented and experienced within the concert environment through immersive live events. We have worked with Sony on live events based around their indie platform games and are currently working with EA on a two part experience of their game ‘Unravel’.

BBC 4 'Singing Our Lives' commission - 2017 - Composer

‘Singing Our Lives’ is an annual national celebration of refugees in the UK through art, collaboration and BBC Radio 4. The project was founded 4 years ago and in 2018 I was offered the opportunity to write a small performance pieces based around 4 child refugees. I wrote a verbatim script gathered from interview recordings made by UNICEF and other sources along with 4 songs. The pieces were scored for solo soprano, piano and winds.

Tower Bridge Bascule Chamber commission - 2019/Current - Composer

For a celebration of Tower Bridge in early 2020, an immersive video experience is being ran in the bascule chambers of the bridge, below water level. I am currently working on writing musical underscore for this experience.

Waddeson Manor Winter Wonderland commission 2017/18 - Composer/Conductor

In both 2017 and 2018 I wrote large amounts of music for Waddesdon Manor’s immersive winter experience that takes place every year from November to January. My score was for their animation series which was projected on the front of the manor six times per day for the duration of the event. The music was recorded with a small size orchestra and conducted by myself.

'Signals' - Footprint Theatre - 18/19 - Composer/Sound Designer

In early 2018 I composed a score for the two women show ‘Signals’, first performed at the Fringe and subsequently taken on tour by Trunkman Productions, performing a festivals and theatres around the country. Described as ‘Disturbingly brilliant’ by the Sunday Times, the show is currently preparing for a second tour of regional theatres with a slightly modified script and score. The music consisted of mainly of synthesised underscore, along side violin and bassoon.

'Voluntold' & 'The House' - Switch Theatre - Royal Exchange Theatres Program 18/19 -
Composer/Sound Designer

I wrote the score for two new writing pieces as part of a Royal Exchange initiative that aimed to promote new theatre companies and spaces in Manchester’s city centre. ‘Voluntold’ tenderly explored wartime loss through history and ‘The House’ violently jolted the audience through a psychedelic story of casual drug addiction in students.

'Phantom of the Opera' - Barbican Silent Film Festival 2018 - Composer/Conductor

In 2017, I composed and conducted the a version of the 1925 silent film 'Phantom of the Opera’ with live music at the Barbican Silent Film Festival. My score took inspiration from Charles Gounod opera ‘Faust’ and was written for a small wind and brass ensemble.

'Japanese Early Animation' - Barbican Silent Film Festival 2019 - Composer

I was asked to score this years selection of early Japanese animation silent films for piano and electronics. The movie was accompanied by live benshi narration and music.

'Musicity: Music for Architecture' commission - 2019 - Composer

‘Musicity’ are a commissioning body that encourage works that embrace sight specificity. They ask composers to write pieces of music to specific architectural sights around the world, to
highlight both the buildings significance, cultural and social importance and beauty, as well as that regions contemporary music voices. I wrote a 9 minute adaptive piece for their newest
commission at barbican and its surrounding areas.

'Anti Agency' commission for fashion agency advert - 2018 - Composer

‘Anti Agency’ are a fashion and modelling agency that represent those who don't conform to the conventional model archetypes. In 2018 they released a promotional advert that I scored for trumpet, drums and electronics.

'When I Fly' children animation festival commission - 2017- Composer

In 2017, I scored my first animated short, premiered at a children’s animation festival. The score used piano, electronics and string quartet.

‘Small Steps' Landscape for Voices 2018 - Royal Opera House Community Chorus - Composer

I wrote a choral piece for 8 voices (4 tenor, 3 bass, 1 soprano) for a surround sound event in which each singers voice was processed to a speak opposite them. They stood in a circle with eh audience in the middle. I set text by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

'En Temps De Temps' - 2017 - Short film commission - Composer

‘En temps De Temps’ is a short French film, directed by Tom Gullam that I scored in 2017 for soprano, violin, viola and piano. The short was an incredibly touching and visually beautiful look at the grief of a mother and her town that has been fatally effected by nuclear waste dumping.
