I am a second year undergraduate student studying piano at the Royal Academy of Music. I have taught at a range of levels, from beginners to advanced, and all ages. I am happy to start from the basics of navigating the keyboard and learning to read music as well as help more advanced pupils progress in terms of technique and individuality. Ultimately I want each pupil to love what they do, and for the drive to come from them. I taylor repertoire choice to the individual, but make sure all areas and techniques are covered. I try to develop each pupil's musical ear, so that they can hear for themselves what they are doing wrong, or right, through aural practice and a practical, demonstrative approach. In the end, I want each pupil to feel that lessons are an exciting exchanging of ideas rather than a weekly test or trap!

I have been giving lessons for 4 years, with several private pupils reaching Grade 8 standard. I have also taught small classes in schools, teaching younger children aural, theory, sight-reading as well as piano. I have mentored advanced young musicians, providing guidance during practice time alongside their lessons with senior musicians. More recently I have mentored children in orchestras (I also play the harp) and done outreach work in the local community, introducing piano playing to children for the very first time.
Kirsty Chaplin - Pianist
Solo Piano Experience:
I am in the second year of my Bachelor of Music degree at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with a scholarship under Professor Emeritus Christopher Elton.
I studied for 7 years at Wells Cathedral School as a joint specialist pianist and harpist under Hilary Coates and Ruth Faber.
I have given numerous solo recitals in Bath, Wells, Wales and in London.
I have given solo recitals in Hong Kong including at the Performing Arts Academy.
Successes in competitions at regional and national levels include Taunton and Bath Young Musician of the Year, EPTA Advanced Category winner and Gregynog Young Musician of the Year.
I have competed at an international level, including at Ettlingen International Piano Competition, Manchester International Concerto Competition (4th prize) and Cooper International Piano Competition in Oberlin.
I have performed concertos with the Taunton Sinfonietta, Wells Symphony Orchestra and Dorset Chamber Orchestra.
Chamber and Orchestral Experience:
I spent a year as a harpist and orchestral pianist in NYO, leading me to play at the BBC proms and at Buckingham Palace.
I have competed and given recitals as part of a piano/cello duo and piano trio.
I accompanied ‘Choralia’, a girls choir from Wells Cathedral School on both harp and piano, performing in several concerts and on radio during a tour of Hong Kong.
Outreach and Experience with Children:
I taught small classes of children as part of the NYO Inspire program, as well as mentoring them in orchestra.
As part of a music tour to Hong Kong I worked in schools, teaching children aural and theory skills.
During my time at Wells Cathedral School I participated in several community outreach projects, teaching small classes in local schools and giving specialised concerts to young children.
My time as Music Prefect at Wells led me to work with children, supervising them in practice, mentoring younger pianists and supervising with homework and sporting activities.
Several years teaching experience of adult amateur private pupils.
I am a dedicated pianist, well used to the hard work and responsibility the trade demands. To me, classical music is relevant and vital and I am always looking to explore new musical outlets and spread musical enjoyment, be it through mediums such as the cross-art form class I am part of, outreach or teaching.
