I am an experienced piano teacher, teaching from beginner to advanced level. I perform regularly as a soloist and chamber musician and have won many prizes in both national and international piano competitions. I have also completed a PhD at Manchester University, specializing in Beethoven.
I prepare students for examinations, or just to play for fun, via Skype from the comfort of your home.
From the number of years I have been teaching the piano to a variety of students from different levels of development, age, and nationalities, I have gained immense experience in how to transmit knowledge in the most suitable and efficient way according to the needs of each pupil.
In addition to teaching, I have organised concerts and other public performances for my students, and have carried pupils through examinations very successfully.
I give a free consultation lesson, and thereafter I charge £30 per hour for beginners and intermediates, and £35 for advanced/professional students.
My name is Artur, and I perform regularly as soloist and chamber musician in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and South Africa. I was born in Portugal, and started my music studies at the age of seven and gave my first recital when I was thirteen. I studied at the Oporto Superior School of Music with Romanian pianist Constantin Sandu, during which time I won the Young Composers competition, the Oporto Conservatoire piano competition and the Maria Carolina Pimentel piano competition. I was invited to continue my studies at the University of Stellenbosch, in Cape Town, South Africa, under the guidance of Prof. Nina Schumann and Benjamin van Eeden, completing my Degree in 2006 with a First. I also won the piano category at the ATKV Muziq competition and received the Betsie Cluver Prize for best overall mark in the final year recital.
In 2008 I was admitted into the Masters degree programme at the Royal Northern College of Music, where I studied under Norma Fisher. That same year, I won the Silverstone-Blank Piano Duo competition. On a regular basis, I take part in masterclasses with world-renowned pianists, including Sequeira Costa, Vladimir Viardo, Konstantin Scherbakov, Nelson Goerner, Steven Osborne and Leslie Howard.
I have a profound love for the music of Beethoven, and as a result, I won the Lionel Bowman competition for the best rendering of a sonata by Beethoven, and received high acclaim for my performance of the ‘Emperor’ Concerto. In addition, I have completed my Doctoral studies on Beethoven’s dedications in 2015 at the University of Manchester, under eminent Beethoven scholar Professor Barry Cooper. My book on this subject will appear later this year, and it will be titled 'Beethoven's Dedications: Stories behind the Tributes'.
My first album, dedicated entirely to Beethoven piano sonatas, is available on all online streaming platforms such as iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music and Youtube. Just type 'Artur Pereira Beethoven' and you will be able to listen to it.
My second recording, featuring Beethoven's 'Appassionata' piano sonata and piano music by Portuguese composer Luiz Costa, will become available this summer. Look out for it.
Artur is by far the best teacher any student could ask for. He has unlimited knowledge, patience and kindness. I came to him as an "advanced" student only to realise I was mediocre at best and in the few years I've been with him, I've learned more than in 10 years with other teachers. His quality is a rare find and is second to none. It's hard to condense into words what Artur is capable of as a teacher and also a performer. I travel 2 hours to have my lessons and it's worth every second. If anyone is looking to learn the piano properly, Artur is the teacher for you.
I am happy to recommend Artur (Pereira) to you as an excellent teacher of piano and of Classical music in general. He has a Ph.D in musicology, he has given many piano recitals, and he has wide teaching experience both privately and at Manchester University, where I supervised his dissertation.
I took up piano a couple of years ago and started off self teaching, but ran in to the problem that I could play some pieces all the way through, yet couldn't make them sound good. I tried two other teachers before I met Artur, but some seem happy enough just to draw attention to which parts need more practice, and point out dynamics.
When I first met Artur, I found his teaching to be a revelation. At our first consultation, which was mostly an introduction, and discussion of requirements, I played him "une Comptine d'un autre ete" from Amelie which at the time I thought I could play fairly well. He then showed me how to play it so it sat more comfortably in my hands and how to bring out the melody, and it was already a million times better.
Since then we have attempted much harder pieces, and I wouldn't have reached anywhere near my current skill level without his expertise (even with the amount of practice I put in). He is an incredibly patient and knowledgeable teacher, and would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone.
Artur is an extremely reliable person, an excellent pianist, and an enthusiastic and encouraging teacher.
