Congolese and french teaching the language to primary kids of all ages

Methodology

Adjectives

are placed after the noun and agree with it;

Eg J’ai une robe bleue (add an e for feminine nouns)

j’ai deux chiens bruns (add an s for plural)

j’ai deux robes bleues (add es for feminine plural).

Exceptions: The following adjectives which are placed before the noun;

Petit / grand / gros / beau / bel / (petite / grande / grosse / belle).

When using two adjectives take care to obey these rules;

J’ai une petite robe bleue – I have a small, blue dress.

J’ai des robes bleu et blanc – I have some blue and white dresses (each dress is blue and white)

J’ai des robes bleues et blanches – I have some blue and white dresses (some blue ones and some white ones).

J’ai les cheveux long et brun – my hair is long and brown (no s on the adjective otherwise you are saying that you have some long hairs and some brown !)

Comparative and superlative adjectives

C’est la montagne la plus haute – It’s the highest mountain.

C’est plus haut que Mont Blanc – It’s higher than Mont Blanc

C’est la maison la plus petite – it’s the smallest house

C’est plus petit que cela – it’s smaller than that.

Il vaut mieux faire cela – it’s better to do that C’est mieux – it’s better.

C’est le meilleur – it’s the best (elle est la meilleure / ils sont les meilleurs)

C’est pire que cela – it’s worse than that C’est le pire – it’s the worst Il va mieux – he’s feeling better. Tout s’empire –All is getting worse.

Cela va de pire en pire – it’s going from bad to worse.

De mieux en mieux – better and better.

Il est le plus bel homme que j’aie jamais vu (use subjunctive auxiliary with superlatives)

Demonstrative Adjectives: Ce / Cet / Cette / Ces = THIS / THESE

Note: All adjectives after Ce are masculine so “Ma maison? C’est beau”.

Indefinite Adjectives: Chaque = each Quelque/s = some

Interrogative Adjectives: Quel ? Quelle ? Quels? Quelles? (Which?)

Background

Nouns (naming words)

French nouns are all masculine or feminine. There are some rules which help. In front of all French nouns, you need to put an article. You do need an article in French even when you drop it in English eg “I like dogs” = J’aime les chiens or “I hate salad” = Je déteste la salade.

Exception: The only time you do not use an article is when you are stating your profession (for example: je suis professeur).

Indefinite article: Un / une = a Des = some

Definite article: Le / La / l’ / les = the

(This is the same as the direct object pronoun = it / him / her / them)

For example I watch them = Je les regarde

I am reading it = je le lis (Note: no need for Je suis in the present tense)

I do like it = je l’aime (Note: no need for Je fais in the present tense here)

Do you like them? = Tu les aimes? Are you reading it? = Tu le lis?

Singular and Plural spelling of nouns in French

Just add an ‘s’: Un chien = A dog Des chiens = Some dogs

Exceptions:

Un cheval = A horse Des chevaux = Some horses

Un oeil = An eye Des yeux = Some eyes

Un feu = A fire Des feux = Some fires (Des feux d’artifice)

Partitive Articles: De la / Du / Des / De l’ = ‘some of the’

For example –

Tu voudrais de la salade? Would you like some (of the) salad?

Tu voudrais du poisson? Would you like some (of the) fish?

BUT just use DE after all negative statements

For example: Je n’ai pas de soeurs – I don’t have any sisters.

Je ne veux pas de salade – I don’t want any salad
