Cover Supervisor with an English Literature Degree, covering English Lessons in North Wales.

Methodology

I have a 2:1 Degree in English Literature. I have lots of experience of covering various lessons, with English being my speciality. I work within the Secondary level of education,as i feel I can work with older children and accomplish more.
I would prepare a lesson plan for each lesson, concentrating on the areas that my student needed assistance with.
I am firm but fair and always want to achieve the best for my students, I can vary each lesson depending on the needs of the students to allow them to be engaged through the lesson.

Experience

I have worked in really challenging schools with students from various backgrounds and cultures, for the past four years. I have worked with various sizes of classes, but also on a one to one basis. One of my students completed a GCSE in English, after being placed within the lowest performing groups, but with a lot of hard work the student gained a Grade C. This was excellent for the student and also for myself as it provided a sense of achievement that with hard work and motivation we can turn the student around.

Vicky's CV

Whilst completing an English Literature Degree at Glyndwr University, to achieve further experience to allow me to apply for a PGCE, I volunteered at Mold Alyn and Flint High, both within the English Departments. At the end of each year at University, I obtained employment with Capita Education Agency and Excel Agency as a Cover Supervisor and classroom assistant. Whilst employed by Capita, I worked at Ysgol Clywedog in Wrexham, Flint High, Ysgol Brynhyfrd, and Queens Park High in Chester. I also completed work for Excel at Denbigh High, as a Cover Supervisor and as a classroom assistant. I also worked with children with SEN these students with special education needs were integrated into the mainstream education. As a classroom assistant it was my role to assist and encourage these children to complete the tasks set with simplified language and encouragement. For example I was assigned to a student , who completed all the work set within the lesson, I talked through the work with the student, explained the task again and provided encouragement throughout the lesson. At the end of the lesson the teacher provided me with feedback informing me of how well the student had performed under my supervision, and he has not worked as well with the assistance of other staff.
Personal Qualities and Attributes,
I possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal this is demonstrated within my role as a Crown Court Caseworker, as every day was different when you walked in the Crown Court Arena, but also as a Cover Supervisor. As a Cover Supervisor each class of children provided a different challenge in their abilities and attention levels. A lot of the classes I covered the children were at a low level academically. In order to keep the children’s attention I had to improvise with various methods in order that they completed the allocated work that had been left by the class teacher. For example in a math’s lesson, I encouraged the children to complete a task on the board with the class assisting, rather than the children working on their own. They were enthusiastic in writing on the board rather than working on their own, which resulted in all the set work being completed.
I believe I am confident in dealing with children in Secondary School and able to build student teacher relationships in a good learning environment. Whilst also being able to recognise and respond to each student’s needs, together with being firm but fair in my approach. I am confident that I am able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy, in how I would deal with a confidential matter. As within my previous role all the information I was privy to was all confidential. I have the confidence to assess each situation and assess how it could be dealt with appropriately.
Whilst working as a Caseworker for the Crown Prosecution Service, I had to be flexible within my working day to allow for a constantly changing situation, I took this skill and transferred it working as a Cover Supervisor. Each working day as a Cover Supervisor was different, I would be using different approaches depending on the lesson I would be covering. For example, the students had completed all the work set, but the teacher had not left an extension task. I had to think on my feet and find an extra task for the students to complete for the last twenty minutes of the lesson.
Although I work well independently, I also understand the importance of working as part of a team. I am confident in establishing working relationships with those in my immediate team, for example with my co – workers to ensure that at the end of the working day, all the outstanding tasks have been completed and if required I am flexible in my working hours to meet the needs of the department. Also at the end of each lesson I also made sure that the classroom was tidy and ready for the next class, and provided a full note for the teacher of the class I had been covering in relation to the work completed.
I am willing to complete any further training and development courses that would be available for this vacancy. Whilst completing my degree, I was faced with the challenges of juggling family and home commitments with strict timescales in which I had to produce a number of essay’s and dissertations. I believe this experience illustrates my capabilities and dedication to complete any relevant training courses.
I have used ICT throughout my workplace and also throughout my studies; I have a good knowledge of Microsoft Office, Access and Excel. Whilst at University, in order for me to complete my assignments I utilised a varied range of resources to locate the required information to prepare presentations. This enabled me to produce an informative and factual Power Point Presentations, which I was able to present in a confident and concise manner to an audience of people I was unfamiliar with.
