About the lesson
I offer editing and proofreading for prose works of fiction in any genre, though fantasy and short fiction are my specialities, having been the focus of my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations respectively. I edit and annotate the writer's work, and then provide feedback in a workshop. Feedback is inclusive of content, format and structure editing, as well as grammar, spelling and punctuation line-editing.
If the writer lives too far to make a face to face session practicable, the option for feedback to be sent electronically is available. Zoom/Skype/Microsoft Teams workshops are also available.
The first workshop may need to be an assessment of the writer's editing/proofreading requirements.
Feedback workshops 45-60 minutes. Workshop cost includes any required editing outside of the workshop. Sometimes, for larger projects, a daily rate of £250 is more suitable.
I am a creative and critical writer and editor at the University of Gloucestershire (BA, MA). From 2022-2025 I will be undertaking a practice-led Creative Writing PhD at York St John's University. Alongside running my own writing, editing and private tutoring business, Ross Turner Academics, I founded and am the editor-in-chief of Superlative, The Short Story Literary Journal, which develops and publishes new and aspiring writers.
As a professional member of The National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE), I attend regular writing conferences and have access to the latest writing in education materials.
Additionally, I am regularly published in journals, magazines and ezines, online and in print, and provide editing services for others published in the same and similar forums.
I enjoy educating; I guest lecture on Creative Writing Courses at several colleges and universities and, amongst other qualifications listed below, have Level 5 TEFL and Level 4 Education & Training qualifications.

Ross has been of invaluable help to me with my Creative Writing MA. From laying out academic essays to fine-tuning and perfecting my creative pieces, Ross has been an incredible support. He's professional, friendly, and I thoroughly recommend him.
I have now engaged Ross on both professional and personal levels. Professionally to work with a non-native English speaker to improve her written English, and personally to help my daughter prepare for her GCSEs. At all time I have found him to be extremely professional and capable, and the feedback from the staff member and my daughter has been very positive.
Ross is an AMAZING tutor, his expertise is so helpful in ensuring your essay is to the highest standard against the grading criteria. Ross takes pride in what he does and gives the most constructive, helpful, and supportive feedback. He has helped me immensely, in my writing ability and confidence. Ross, spends numerous hours looking thoroughly through your work, and provides insightful and informative sessions to discuss the feedback, and is always available and contactable for further help. I couldn't recommend Ross enough, he has been so supportive in my academic writing. Thankyou Ross.
Ross is outstanding. Professional, efficient and has a brilliant way with explaining complex writing and grammar issues in a clear and simple way. We are a Chinese background family, we keen to have a good English tutor to help my son in his writing and improve his English. My son's progression has been impressive since we started tutoring with Ross 3 months ago. He has a detailed plan of what needs to be achieved and how fast we should go, setting challenging homework to help push my son on a weekly basis.
Ross is very much in demand so if you can secure a place with him don't hesitate to make the most of it.
Ross is a fantastic tutor, from beginning to end he was there every step of the way. He evaluates your piece of writing carefully and all comments/feedback he gives are well explained. He notices details that you would otherwise miss. As well as suggesting improvements, he also highlights parts of your writing that he enjoys/appreciates, encouraging you to continue with that style. Ross is extremely personable, you really get to know him as a person on the other side of technology. He also makes you feel that your piece of work or project is just as important to him as it is to you. His professionalism, expertise and personable nature all mean that I would recommend him time and time again. In fact, he is the only person I would turn to when needing help with a project.
It’s a great experience for me to have proofreading with Ross! He is very friendly and professional. My work has been carefully edited before our sessions. He was also open to listen to my ideas while we went through my work together in the session. Looking forward to working with Ross again.

Ross is a fellow student in my poetry workshop at the University of Gloucestershire. When I get my work edited by Ross, I always receive helpful and detailed notes about how I can improve it, and I can always rely on him to give me honest and reliable feedback. I would recommend Ross if you need an unbiased and professional analysis of your work.
Ross is an absolutely great tutor! He’s helped edit and annotate my work and goes through feedback with me so that I understand and know what to do to improve. He’s patient, calm and friendly and he’s made such a difference in my work. I’d say a lot of my higher grades and achievements are down to him. Ross is the one to go to if you need help and support
Ross is incredibly patient when teaching and will also make sure I understand where my errors are. He doesnt just correct them for me but makes sure I know why its wrong. He is also very good at making suggestions to allow me to grow in my writing and not just change things for me. He always goes in depth when editing and never leaves anything unread. Would 100% recommend.
If you are looking for someone that is totally in control of your learning and offers support and guidance along the way, then look no further than Ross. We have studied together for three years and he is my absolute ‘go-to’ person for every aspect of the written word. Snap this guy up while you can.
Ross is incredibly patient and very approachable. He is great at editing, and giving tips and advice on written pieces.
