You've found a real gem,
Ruth is very sought-after this month.
My method is to use each student's personal interests as a starting point. Not only will this help to make the lessons engaging, it will also show me what kind of learner the student is, thereby allowing me to develop the best strategies for communicating information and making it stick.
This makes me a fun, adaptable and creative tutor, constantly responding to my students and communicating with them (and of course, when appropriate, their guardians) about the best way forward.
I am a film and television researcher, with a degree in English from the University of Cambridge.
I've been giving private lessons for 9 years, using my subject knowledge and practical expertise to create a tailored experience based on each student's individual needs. I work through several prestigious tutoring agencies, including JK Educate and Holland Park.
Whether that's pulling a GCSE grade up from a D to a B, or coaching students to successfully gain places at Oxford and Cambridge, I hope that my results speak for themselves.
I enjoy working with all ages and abilities, because I believe English is a rewarding subject no matter the level. It's all about finding a way in - as a tutor, that's what I aim to provide.
I've set my rate at £55 per hour because that is what I earn by working through highly selective, London-based tutoring agencies such as JK Educate and Titanium Tutors.
I would, however, be happy to negotiate a lower price for financially disadvantaged students. Please don't hesitate to contact me to organise a confidential discussion of your circumstances so we can try to set a fair price.

JK Educate, Holland Park, Titanium Tutors and other agencies, CURRENT.
English Tutor - 11+, GCSE, A Level, IB and graduate essays
I currently offer english tuition to a broad range of clients at every level, both in London and across the world. I love my job and can provide glowing references from my current employers. The reason for my Superprof advert is that I would like to offer my services directly to clients as well through agencies who charge more.
Bexhill Sixth Form College, Sep 2017 – Dec 2017
Oxbridge Applications Tutor
I was hired by the school to offer sixth-form students support in applying to Oxbridge, including helping fill out UCAS forms and giving individual feedback on personal statements. I gave classes on the ideal personal statement ,on how to ace entrance exams and how to prepare for the difficult Oxbridge interview. Of the multiple students invited to interview, 100% were offered a place, which they attributed to my coaching.
St Johns Women’s Society, Oct 2015 – Aug 2016
President
As President of the voluntary society set up by the famous Laura Bates, I organised speakers from renowned QCs, to linguistics experts, to even Mary Beard. My network of contacts from my time at Cambridge allows me to call on academics working at the pinnacle of their fields, as demonstrated by the incredible slate that the St John’s Women’s Society offered. This gives me a unique insight into not only the intellectual peaks of academia, but also in how to communicate this information in an engaging and accessible way.
Zylo Performance, Sep 2011 – Sep 2013 (continuing to Aug 2016 during university vacations)
Drama, Film and Dance Tutor
At Zylo, I taught after-school dance and drama lessons for primary school children. I gave classes in five different schools per week, teaching over 150 different children. This large number attests to the fact that I am a fun and engaging teacher, with pupils always returning to my classes, including returning over the Easter and Summer holidays in order to participate in our vacation film schools.
Camp Wicosuta, Jun 2013 – Aug 2013
Drama Tutor and Camp Counsellor
I taught drama lessons at a summer camp for six- to sixteen-year-olds in New Hampshire, USA. I developed the course myself, adapting the curriculum to suit every age, ability and class-size. Alongside this, I coordinated two shows each four-week session, from painting sets to running rehearsals. Part of my role was to provide pastoral as well as practical care; I had many opportunities to build on existing experience supporting children with autism and other neural development disorders.
Heathfield Tutors: September, 2009 — June, 2011
English and Mathematics Tutor
Heathfield Tutors was my first teaching job. For three hours on a Saturday morning, I would provide one-on-one support with Maths and English to students aged eleven to sixteen. I planned the lessons myself, marked work and provided feedback to both pupils and parents. I helped one student hoping to scrape a C in English to achieve a B overall, giving him particular confidence in tackling poetry, which was something he had not believed himself capable of.
FILM & TELEVISION INDUSTRY
Kindling Media, Feb 2018 – Dec 2018
Senior Researcher/Assistant Producer
Part of the small, dynamic team behind Channel 4’s huge ratings success ‘Escape to the Chateau’. Project managing multiple strands of production demonstrates my excellent written skills and my ability to communicate ideas in an exciting and engaging way. I worked abroad, utilising my French A Level and becoming fluent.
RDF Television, Feb 2017 – Jan 2018
Senior Development Researcher, formerly Junior
Part of the department behind the creation of ‘The Secret Life of Four-Year-Olds’ and many other programmes with both broad appeal and educational value. Managed ‘development’ of various ideas, meaning taking the original concept from creative meeting, to assiduously researched document, to pitch. This developed my excellent communication skills.
Knickerbockerglory TV, Nov 2016 – Jan 2017
Runner
Part of a large, energetic team filming the Channel 5 Brexit show, ‘Mind the Age Gap’. My first job in television, after graduating that summer.
