My primary focus in teaching will always be the student, and this means understanding the student's needs and goals.
My goal is to enable the student to create exciting music, although I am more than happy to teach any technical aspects, such as mixing and mastering, as they are also very important. I always try to ensure that I communicate concepts clearly and succinctly, with a focus on practical applications of this knowledge. I want the student to feel as though they are creating something they can be proud of, whilst offering constructive criticism, mentoring and practical advice to enable the student to improve.
I also offer lessons in DJing, something which I have been teaching for almost a year. These cover beatmatching, technical and structural mixing and artistic DJing. These lessons are charged at £30p/h.
I have recently graduated with a first-class Creative Music Production degree (BA) from The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London.
I have been involved in music for over a decade, first through playing the guitar and latterly through production, which I have been doing for seven years. My background is in rock and metal, although my tastes are broad, and much of my current listening habits and productions are electronic, ranging from leftfield pop to club music. I am always looking to innovate and experiment, and this is something that translates to my lessons.
I am more of a ‘computer musician’ these days. However, I am a proficient guitarist, bassist and drummer and can play some keys. My knowledge of digital audio and music theory is good, but I always like my lessons to have a practical focus, where music-making is the end goal.
Some of my strengths include composition and arrangement, drum programming, sound design and creative processing, and mixing and mastering. I also have a wealth of my created samples and pre-sets to which students will gain access. Furthermore, I am an experienced recording engineer.
My main Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) is Ableton Live, but I am proficient in Pro Tools and Cubase, with a working knowledge of Logic Pro.
I already have a few years of experience teaching both music production and DJing, meaning that I will be using methods that are tried and tested. I enjoy the teaching experience – particularly in terms of music production – as I feel that seeing a student develop their craft is very rewarding.
Please give me at least 48 hours notice if you wish to cancel a lesson. If there are unforeseen circumstances at a later time, please contact me ASAP.
Please note that the free hour lesson is contingent on either doing the lesson via webcam or booking a two-hour slot.

Perfect! Very experienced and skilled producer. The perfect teacher if you want to improve your understanding making Music. Hands on and useful advice. I can truly recommend him.
Bjorn's melody/chords writing skills are strong, but he needs to work on his drum programming and overall arrangement.
David has taught DJing with us at Become a DJ for a year. He is knowledgeable and his students always speak highly of him. I can't recommend him enough!
David is thorough with his explanations and very creative when giving examples, which does help understand the topics.
Also he is down to earth so there are no barriers or issues when approaching him with questions.
David has been tutoring me for a number of months and it’s been a brilliant experience. David is patient and great fun whilst also having a deep understanding of music and the technical aspects related to mixing - traits that provide a great learning experience. I would highly recommend David as a tutor.
I met David Smith during our music production studies 3 years ago. David’s professionalism and goodwill made him the person-to-go-to whenever I had a doubt about something, situation that was the same for every other student in my class. I highly recommend David Smith as a Superprof, in fact, he is still the first person I think of whenever I need another pair of capable and honest ears.
I was a novice when I found David. He helped take my music to a professional level, with my first track getting a five star review from electronic music legends Leftfield. David is diligent and passionate about music and the final product. He is also conceptual and able to co-create if required. I'd be more than happy to take a call to answer any questions. I have plans to work with David very soon.
David is very knowledgable and professional. He taught me a huge amount on mixing , music production and mastering. He has a great vibe about him and has a huge passion for music with really rubbed off on me. He has pushed my production to the next level.
At any level I think David can definitely improve production skills! He’s professional, knowledgable and for me always knows how to creatively communicate mixing, mastering and arrangement
