I believe learning is best facilitated by engagement and discussion. Each lesson will follow a loose model:
For Literature lessons:
-A discussion about the primary text being studied.
-A short critical reading related to the primary text.
-Discussion about the critical reading, and the primary text.
For Creative Writing:
-A short reading about the topic (ie. character, gesture, setting)
-A discussion about the reading.
-A writing exercise.
-Reading the student's writing exercise, and discussing it.
Each model is quite loose, allowing room for students to explore and to create their own ideas about the subject. My role as tutor is to provide the information, the support, and the challenge to allow students to engage with the texts in their own ways, and eventually create their own ideas about the texts. Rather than rigorously forming students' minds to my own way of thinking, I hope to create educated, informed, and independent-minded thinkers, fostering a lifelong interest and passion in the subject.
For lessons outside of the Edinburgh City Centre, I do ask for travel compensation (£3.5).
I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If a lesson is cancelled less than 24 hours prior to it's scheduled time, I do ask for it to still be paid for in full.
I have a BA Hons in English Literature from the University of Toronto, and an MSc in Creative Writing from the University of Edinburgh. I will be beginning an English Literature PhD in September, specializing in contemporary fiction, feminist and psychoanalytic theory.
In addition to studying literature, I write fiction. My short fiction has appeared in Adelaide Magazine, Lamplight Magazine, and Potluck Mag. I am currently working on my first novel.
I will be teaching Creative Writing to teenagers this summer, as part of a summer program for young people at St. Andrews.
