Creative Writing, Speech and Drama – English, Communication and Performance for all ages

Methodology

Friendly, focused Communication and Performance training. Build life skills and boost your confidence.

I teach Creative Writing, Speech and Drama: Audition preparation, Creative Writing, Confidence Building, Eleven Plus English, LAMDA Exams, Public Speaking, Speech-writing.

Qualified LAMDA Teacher (achieved my LSDE in 2012), MA Creative Writing (Bath Spa University, 2007). I am currently taking my PhD in Creative Writing.

I charge £50ph from my bases in Ealing W5 and Barnes/Putney SW15.

I also provide sessions by experienced substitute teachers in schools and homes across London.

During term-time I offer weekday, evening and weekend sessions; during school holidays I have weekday and evening slots.

All ages and all levels of experience are very welcome! Many current students are at school or college but others are teachers, lecturers, writers and actors!

In addition to Eleven Plus tuition for English and Creative Writing I offer LAMDA Exams (from introductory level, right through to PCertLAM and beyond).

Skype tuition is also available.

Whether you love or loathe writing or performing, promise you will surprise yourself with what you can do!

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I left copywriting for Telegraph Media Group in 2018 to produce and direct Terry Pratchett's Night Watch for Macmillan Cancer Support, in memory of a fellow member of the Questors Youth Theatre where I went on to become senior tutor. I have taught, written and directed ever since, and still act when time and interesting stories come up (I am a member of Spotlight and Starnow). I run Green Ink Writers' Gym ((concealed information) based at Waterstones, Piccadilly and Olympic Studios, Barnes.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I am currently taking a PhD in Creative Writing with the University of Hull (associate student: University of Roehampton).

LSDE (LAMDA Diploma of Speech and Drama Education), LAMDA
MA, Creative Writing, Bath Spa University
BA, English Literature, Roehampton University

I also studied directing at the City Lit and acting at Kingston College/The Questors Theatre.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Directory of LAMDA Teachers; Voice, the teachers' union; Spotlight; Starnow.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I am proudest of those who thought themselves 'too shy', 'too late', or 'not good enough' and achieve results that let them see themselves differently - for good.

A new actor who speaks English as a second language improved his focus, emotional commitment, and diction in both languages and was accepted to drama school. A primary school pupil who struggled with audibility and eye contact when she arrived and achieved a distinction in her first LAMDA Exam a term later. Two teenage acting students are already pursuing successful careers as voiceover artists.

I lead workshops for published and unpublished writers across the genres, helping them gain space and confidence to create new work.

At the age of 4 my daughter suffered allergies and eczema, and used to get agitated and be very apprehensive. After starting Speech and Drama, she is very confident, never shy to ask anything in class or at home, can approach her peers with ease, start a conversation readily, make new friends quickly. She excelled in her confidence and skills and was chosen for voiceover: animation and radio. She can interpret the text, read and speak as if the scene is happening in front of you.

Thank you so much for today's writing workshop. I thought it was excellent - incredibly helpful. The exercise was brilliant! When leading a group, you did the job of a good leader; you held the space really well, kept calm when there was any hint of over-dominance from one or other person, stuck with your programme.
